The intent of the MiLR is to allow a place for draft picks to develop without consuming a roster spot. This is not an area for teams to put players from their roster onto in order to save cap space. I think therefore the rule should be added:Only players drafted by your organization may be placed on the MiLR. This would take place immediately. I know some players have already been moved without this rule and thats why we need the adjustment now! Please vote ASAP. Without vote or discussion I will make rule official by decree.
I agree to some extent, but what about players who are available and have never played a game in the NHL yet but are unowned. For example players playing in the WHL/OHL (Junior leagues) who will not be available to even play a game this year unless there is an emergency call up (which rarely happens). And just wondering but how are people saving cap space because any player making 1m+ has probably exceeded 40 games and therefore not be in the minors anyway. Not a confirmation until further discussion. let me know
I guess maybe juniors is a tough question. How would this effect the draft? If we make prospects cost 250k then it would keep limited talent on the major league rosters. Teams wouldn't waste space on junk. It would be easy to do this by allowing prospect contracts to be offered for anyone under 40 games. These could be bid on with money that would be considered a bonus, payable in the front of the deal. For example: John Doe is a prospect with under 40 games. I win a bid for John Doe at 1.5m and so this would play out like this. Prospect contract @ 250k + 1.25m Bonus (which comes off the books at years end). This allows teams to still grab premium spects without ruining cap for years to come. This would also ensure teams with less stars have more ability to get talent. The issue is a team bids for a player and signs him to a huge deal. Then sends him to the minors and voids his contract with the Major league club, and would come back into the league with a deal that is depending upon draft status. This in effect clears the cap for the team that they spend bidding for the player; which allows them to bid big on another player, and repeat.
Really I haven't seen a case of this and I didn't know that is how it works. I thought that only implied to players without a contract who began in the minor leagues. I thought the players who have been signed to contracts and sent to minors retain their contract.
I will point out, the purpose of the MiLR, is a place for managers to develop drafted playe. rs without penalty. Signing any free agent and sending them to the MiLR is counter to the intent and that door needs to be closed. We have 250k limit as contracts, instead of 500k, so teams can put minors on their roster without serious cap penalty. I think the bonus adjustment would solve the issue. Good discussion!
Aren't our contracts on the 0.1m basis so this would either have to be a 0.2m or 0.3m contract. I think just putting players in the minors but retain their contracts would work as well. It is how it is done in the Double Dribble league.
Sorry its .2m minimum. So what happens if a team bids 9m on a player, wins them and sends them to the MiLR so there isn't a cap hit? They get the money back to bid on players again. There are some minors who wont get 40 games for a while but are highly valued and would get lots of money. It's a loophole, which is not good.
