This blockbuster is driven again by Cap Space.The story for this trade is : Once upon a time a
brilliant GM was hired to take over a team managed by a MIA GM. He quickly realized that he has no cap space, high paid salaries, no draft pick in 2015, no real top prospects in his weak Farm teams and a shortage of players at the NHL level. Since he was not able to compete on the FA market this year due to no $ he decided to trade some high paid salaries. He was approached by
for Kessel and possibly Letang. Both salaries total 13.3M, so from a list proposed by
he realized that one to one or 2 for 1 combination was not feasible due to Salary Cap so he decided to package several players to equal the salary for these 2 and at the same time to fill gap in his roster (mainly centers) with good NHL players. Then PMs after PMs both GMs decided to include prospects with equal value - (Fiala 1/11-2014) against Pouliot (1/8-2012) (both should be in NHL next year) , Kerdiles (2/36 - 2012) for Klimchuk (1/28-2013) and Armia (1/16-2011) for Hishon (1/17-2010).
And they decided to trade some 2016 picks –
Picks 1 and 4 for
Picks 2 and 5 which should provide some advantage to
next year.
