MLB News / Fantasy Baseball: This Week’s Waiver Wire Pickups
« on: April 15, 2013, 01:00:30 AM »
This article is brought to you by our friends at Fantasy Furnace...

The season just began and the injury bug has spread throughout the league. The smarter, more experienced owners have already come up with contingency plans. It isn’t too late to tap the resources of the waiver wire while other owneres are still napping.

In the case of Jose Reyes (ankle) who will probably not be returning until the All-Star break, and who will be to hard to replace with someone of equal talent, the following short stops have been‘added’ just in Yahoo! leagues:

Jean Segura-Brewers-7542 adds
Marwin Gonzalez-Astros-5859 adds
Jhonny Peralta-Tigers-5211 adds
Jed Lowrie-Athletics-4934 adds
Pete Kozma-Cardinals-3869 adds

*We like Marwin Gonzalez who is available in 90% of leagues as well as Jhonny Peralta who is also widely available (75% of leagues). Stay away from Pete Kozma on the Cardinals unless you are in very deep roto leagues and are in desperate need of a SS as he does not have much power and doesn’t steal any bases.

Chris Carter-1B,OF-Astros :HOU:- The A’s gave up on Carter in the off season after spending three years as a bench player. What we like about the 26 year old is his home run power. Last season he averaged one round-tripper for every 13.6 at bats (16 HRs in 218 ABs). His downside is his batting average. Even though he is currently hitting .289 he will not be able to sustain such a high % over the long haul. Carter also has dual position eligibility which could come in handy in deeper and A.L. only leagues.

Travis Hafner-UTIL-Yankees :NYY:- Best known while playing 10 seasons with the Indians, Haf is filling in for all the bats (and power) that are missing from The Yankees lineup with Teixeira, Granderson, Jeter, and A-Rod all injured. The 35 year old is just two seasons removed from hitting 29 homers in just 118 games. If healthy, Hafner can still bring it however his UTIL status always presents a challenge in some leagues. He has a career .278 batting average and is off to a great start having crushed 3 HRs in just 33 ABs.

Nate Schierholtz-OF-Cubs :CHC:- For the time being, we are recommending Schieholtz to...

The first week of baseball is now in the bank, however in fantasy, there are many leagues that do not commence until week #2. Perfect timing then for our Waiver Wire Pickups of the week! (Keep in mind that there is only a small sampling to go by after just one week).

We wish all of the owners out there much success this season and want to remind you all to stay active on the waiver wire for that added edge in your leagues. Good luck!

John Buck-C-Mets :NYM:- This is a ‘good news’-'bad news’ pickup prospect this week. The good news is that Buck, who languished last season with the Marlins batting a meager .192 with 12 HRs and 43 RBIs , has now had an offensive explosion in the early going this season. He belted his third home run of the season off of Roy Halladay on Monday and now leads the National League in RBIs with an even dozen. Now the bad news. At some point in the season, Buck will become merely a bench player as the Mets will be calling up their top catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud. So if Buck is still available in your league, he will pays dividends for the short term while he’s on a roll but he’ll be on loan…

Darin Downs-RP-Tigers :DET:- If you’re in a deeper roto league and have the bench space, you might think of stashing this second year hard thrower. In 21 big league appearances, the 29 year old who has spent the majority of his time in the minors, has averaged 1K per inning. So far this young season, in just three games, Downs has two holds, 7 strikeouts, 2 BBs and has posted a 2.08 ERA to go along with a miniscule 0.46 WHIP. The closer situation in Detroit is one by committee with Phil Coke struggling, and 35 year old Joaquin Benoit unreliable. Downs is a low risk-high reward pickup and is virtually unowned in leagues.

Franklin Gutierrez-OF-Mariners :SEA:- Now in his fifth year with Seattle, Gutierrez has been plagued by the injury bug over the past couple of seasons and so manager Eric Wedge has been monitoring his playing time to start the season. Off to a pretty good start to the season- 2 homers, 6 RBIs and a .319 batting average, Gutierrez is a solid bet to...

No, Phil Jackson did not return to coach the Knicks :NY: nor will he do so anytime soon… He was just one of many who returned Friday night to commemorate the last championship team that the Knicks have had in four decades. What sort of reception would the most successful coach in NBA history receive from the Garden faithful?

It was almost a year ago, June 2012, that ex-Knick and 11 time NBA Championship coach Phil Jackson, scoffed at the notion of coaching the Knicks, stating, ” They have a clumsy team!” Personally, I feel that Phil was just saying that out of disappointment for the Knicks for not even offering him the post occupied by Mike D’Antoni before Mike Woodson was named the interim and later the head coach.

“There’s just too much work that has to be done with that team, they don’t fit together well. Phil Jackson stating his disinterest in the Knick's coaching job. Photo:
“There’s just too much work that has to be done with that team, they don’t fit together well.” Phil Jackson stating his disinterest in the Knick’s coaching job In June 2012.

If you remember, he also told the press that he didn’t want to travel because he wanted to spend as much time as possible on his Montana estate and New York was just too far away for his liking. The press here as well as countless bloggers, chastised the Knicks for not even extending Jackson an invitation to discuss the possibility of taking over the head coaching job.

Knick fans, after all of Jackson’s sound bites had filled the newspapers and the internet showcasing his ‘disinterest’ in the vacancy, turned sour on the Hall of Famer, especially once the season began. D’Antoni was soon shown the exit sign, and then Linsanity took over New York City and the sportsworld at large.

Fast forward to last night’s festivities at Madison Square Garden. Legends night. The commemoration of the 1972-1973 NBA Championship; the last one the Knickerbockers would win over the past 40 years. All the players from that legendary team, save for Dave DeBusschere who passed in May of 2003 at the age of 62, were there as speeches and awards filled the World’s Most Famous Arena.

The former superstars would be announced to the capacity crowd once halftime was underway and I thought to myself, “I wonder what kind of greeting PhilJ ackson will receive from the throng of Knick supporters on a night the team would be gunning for its 11th...

MLB News / HOT PICKUP OF THE WEEK: Tyler Flowers
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:30:35 AM »
Article brought to you by our friends at Fantasy Furnace...

Tyler Flowers that is! In our first Hot Pickup of the season, we have chosen a catcher who has been in the majors for part of the past four years, and who now enters his fifth season as the White Sox :CHW: starting catcher. He was a distant 33rd round pick of the Atlanta Braves :ATL: in the 2005 draft and hasn’t seen much playing time with Chicago until this year.

He is barely owned in most leagues but we suspect that will change over the next several days or once managers get familiar with his potential as a Sleeper candidate. Flowers hasn’t found it easy getting substantial playing time as the ever durable A.J. Pierzynski has seen the majority of action behind the plate since Flowers’ arrival in the bigs.

Not one to hit for average, even in the minors, Flowers has impressed with his propensity for hitting the long ball and hitting rockets at that. His home runs last year averaged 420 feet!! Although a limited sample, Flowers has had 280 career at bats for the White Sox and has belted 14 homers for an average of about 1 HR for every 20 ABs. Already this year, in just 7 at bats, Flowers has crushed...

NBA News / Fantasy Basketball: The Final Week’s Playoff Pickups
« on: April 02, 2013, 11:51:30 PM »
This article is brought to you by our friends at Fantasy Furnace...

For most of you, this week will represent the last one for fantasy owners out there. So this will be our last Waiver Wire Pickups for this fantasy basketball season. For those still alive, congratulations! For those who aren’t, the good news is that we get to do this all over again next season. Here are our final five playoff pickups for the week of  4/1-4/7. All of them are available in 15% of leagues or lower. Good luck!

C.J. Miles-SG,SF-Cavs :CLE-NBA:- Given all the injuries on the Cavs, C.J. has been their most effective bench player over the last week or so. In four of his last five games, the former 2nd rounder has scored in double-digits and, in fact, scored a team high 19 points in Friday’s game vs Phoenix. Miles has averaged 14.4 points, 3.4 dimes, and 2.4 threes over those five games deeming him more than serviceable in deeper leagues. Cleveland plays four times starting on April 1st.

Tyler Zeller-C-Cavs :CLE-NBA:- Another Cavalier to consider is their starting center who also has come on of late. The 1st round, 17th pick of the Mavericks out of North Carolina in last year’s draft, has been averaging 9.8 points and 8.8 boards over the past four games including a 14 point, 10 rebound night vs the the 76ers on Friday. Zeller also averages a block a game for those lacking in that category. He deserves a look-see in deeper formats and is available in under 10% of most leagues.

Wes Johnson-SG,SF-Suns :PHX:- Since Johnson has been given a starting role back on March 8th, he has become fantasy relevant in three categories- points, threes, and steals. 8 of the 12 games in which he’s started, Johnson has scored in double-digits for an average of just under 14 points a game; 19 PPG over his last three together with 4 treys and 2 steals. A definite pickup candidate for those in most formats. As long as Johnson continues to see the minutes and is able to produce these kinds of numbers, there’s no reason to leave him on waivers with the playoffs on the line. Barely owned as well (13%).

Kyle O’Quinn-C-Magic :ORL:- The Magic’s 2nd round pick in last year’s draft from Jamaica, N.Y. has been starting in place of Nikola Vucevic (concussion) and has taken advantage of the extra floor time. Last Wednesday vs the Bobcats, O’Quinn turn in a season high...

Franchise GM: Completed Transactions / Jedd Gyorko MI Eligibility
« on: April 01, 2013, 11:57:35 AM »
Quote
A minor league player called up from the EDR will immediately have their eligibility analyzed.  All players eligible for multiple positions will be analyzed in the offseason.  The rule is 25 GP and 20 IP (half of the eligibility for the MLB clock on prospect contracts) for the past and current season.

Gyorko played 47 games at 2B last year (minors) therefore he should have MI eligibility in addition to CI.  This should be reflected in the official roster of the Pirates.

Armchair Fantasy Baseball: Archives / AFB Header Updated
« on: March 29, 2013, 05:07:49 PM »
The new league header is cleanly tied to the new league management system and showing above all boards.

I am not sure what the Fantrax league link is, so Kenny can update that through the system.

Franchise GM: Archives / FGM Updates just in time for April!
« on: March 29, 2013, 03:24:05 PM »
The header has been updated along with the link to the 2013 league page which has now been paid.  The record book has been updated to reflect 2012 figures.  Also, each of the team history pages for NL teams now have records and commentary for 2012.  Per my review of teams last year and this year, here are my teams to watch.

:CHC: Much of the roster is the same but is young and talented
:COL: The core is still there and the Rockies were playing above .500 ball in the 2nd half last season
:NYM: Corey's Mets improved greatly last season and are flying under the radar.

Also, where did the :CIN: history page go?  For some reason, the team page was in completed transactions, but the post with the history is missing.

We always suggest entering several mock drafts in anticipation of your real draft, if for no other reason than to familiarize yourself with the tenor of the rooms you draft in and to see who your fellow managers are avoiding and who they are snagging early or late in the drafts. After all, practice makes perfect, so take advantage of the mock drafts that are available where you regularly set up your leagues.

What to expect from Stephen Drew? | Image courtesy of SB Nation

Even though the pre-season has not gotten underway yet, we have done enough of these drafts and have completed our research so that we are now able to offer you advice, suggestions, and options in two major categories: who to avoid drafting and who the sleepers might be this year. This post will deal with the hitters we suggest you avoid drafting or at best, ‘draft with caution’.

Stephen Drew-SS-Red Sox :BOS2:- Drew will start the season playing for his third team since April 2012. Boston signed Drew to a one-year $9.5 million contract in December while they wait for hot prospect Xander Bogaerts to become their SS of the future in 2014. Even when Drew is not injured, there’s a low upside as he has hit just 12 home runs and stolen 5 bases over his last 608 ABs (two seasons).

Alex Rodriguez-3B-Yankees :NYY:- The biggest red flag for A-Rod has been his deteriorating health. His second left hip surgery in December will keep him off the field until the summer. He has averaged only 17 homers and 59 RBIs over the past two seasons and isn’t worth stashing until his return as his best years are behind him.

Danny Espinosa-2B-Nationals :WAS:
- We would label Espy as a “draft with caution” as his nearly 20/20 potential makes him an intriguing choice at a position that is lacking in those numbers. However, there’s two problems with Espinosa: He has a hard time hitting from the left side which could mean more ABs for Steve Lombardozzi, and his strikeouts (355 in the last two seasons) are out of control. Maybe an option solely for deeper formats.

Rafael Furcal-SS-Cardinals :STL:- The often injured Furcal put off having elbow surgery last season and that’s a concern for a player that has missed 60 or more games in four of the last five years. His stolen bases have dropped from 22 in 2010, to 9 in ’11, to 12 last year. He can still score runs but needs to play for that to happen and that’s a big question mark.

Brian Roberts-2B-Orioles :BAL:- Talk about a walking *M*A*S*H unit, (for those old enough to remember the movie & TV show), Roberts has been a cash cow for the medical community in Baltimore with a recent concussion, hip, groin, back, shin, knee, and stomach problems. Injuries have limited his... Read more here...
