Franchise GM: Clarifications & Discussion / Contract Buyout
« on: July 13, 2009, 04:01:19 PM »
Should we add a rule to allow teams to buyout a player's contract with the following stipulations?
  • Adds up the rest of the contract into one lump sum, therefore eliminating future years (and salary) of contract.
  • That lump sum is increased by some percentage (call it a buyout tax)
  • This amount does not count as player's annual salary.  It falls under other expenses, so that it will not affect a team's cap in the following year.
  • Total expenses must fall under salary cap

I looked at Mike Mazzetti's, GM of the Dodgers, numbers, and the Dodgers will owe Andruw Jones money for the next five years.  I thought some option to wrap up those cap hits should be available (at a premium of course).

Franchise GM: Clarifications & Discussion / 2010 Salary Cap Debate
« on: July 10, 2009, 03:36:03 PM »
I have received several questions about the workings of the variable salary cap.  I am open for it to change, but I do want the variable cap to stay so large and small market teams can be differentiated.  I think before money starts to be tossed around in free agency (especially offseason), we should get people's thoughts on the cap for 2010 and beyond.

I saw this setup in another 30-team franchise league, and I think it may suit us better than using one number at the top for the Yankees and then dropping by X amount for each franchise....

Quote
• Tier 1 – Yankees
• 2008 Salary Cap Amount for Tier 1 - $140 million
• 1 Franchise Option

• Tier 2 – Red Sox, Mets, Angels, Tigers, Cubs
• 2008 Salary Cap Amount for Tier 2 - $120 million
• 1 Franchise Option
• 1 Restricted Option

• Tier 3 – Astros, Dodgers, Mariners, White Sox, Braves, Phillies
• 2008 Salary Cap Amount for Tier 3 - $100 million
• 2 Franchise Options
• 1 Restricted Option

• Tier 4 – Blue Jays, Rays, Brewers, Twins, Reds, Rangers, Royals, Indians, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Giants, Cardinals, Orioles,
• 2008 Salary Cap Amount for Tier 4 - $90 million
• 2 Franchise Options
• 2 Restricted Options

• Tier 5 – Athletics, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins, Padres
• 2008 Salary Cap Amount for Tier 5 - $80 million
• 3 Franchise Options
• 3 Restricted Options

Now, we would have to use different numbers, but maybe a setup like this would work...

Tier 1 - Team with #1 ranked max salary of previous season has cap of $250m, one RFA tag
Tier 2 - Next 2 teams, cap of $200m, one RFA tag
Tier 3 - Next 3 teams, cap of $150m, one RFA tag
Tier 4 - Next 4 teams, cap of $125m, two RFA tag
Tier 5 - Next 5 teams, cap of $100m, two RFA tag
Tier 6 - Next 5 teams, cap of $90m, two RFA tag
Tier 7 - Next 4 teams, cap of $80m, three RFA tag
Tier 8 - Next 3 teams, cap of $70m, three RFA tag
Tier 9 - Next 2 teams, cap of $60m, three RFA tag
Tier 10 - Bottom team, cap of $50m, four RFA tag

This enables the small market teams to at least get a shot to match some contracts (most likely small ones), and it cleans up the enormous amount a cap room that the mid and large market teams have right now compared to the small market squads.

Currently, the cap room from #1 to #30 looks like:
 $33.0
 $96.5
 $91.5
 $59.5
 $90.5
 $83.5
 $93.0
 $76.5

 $26.5
 $8.0
 $13.0
 $(11.5)
 $8.4
 $2.0
 $(1.5)

My recommended system would change it

Franchise GM: Transactions / Transactions FYI
« on: July 06, 2009, 11:32:39 AM »
Transactions
  • All transactions including position eligibility must be posted in this sub-forum.
  • Commissioner makes all moves at the league site.
  • Free agency is handled by bidding.  If you start the bidding on a player, please create a thread with their name as the subject.  Each player is auctioned in a separate thread (at this board) that may be started by anyone.

Free Agency Bidding
  • You do not need to post how many years you are offering the contract until you win the bid.
  • Salaries (bids / years) must be valued in increments of $0.5m
  • Minimum bid increment for a total bid less than $20m is $.5m.  If it is $20m the minimum increment is $1m.
  • Bids on a player are considered final when it has not been bid on for 72 hours.
  • The winning bid will be the highest total contract amount.  Note that term limits apply after a bid is won.
  • Once you have won the bid on a player, you then must open a spot on your roster for the player.  If your roster is at the maximum number of players, then you must declare who you wish to release.  After this, you must set the contract terms.  Once this is done, the commissioner will edit your roster.
  • There is no limit to the number of players that can be auctioned at one time or the number of bids for a player.
  • Note that bids on players that may fall under prospect contracts work differently.  The prospect contract has its own set of rules at a league minimum salary.  Any amount over $0.5m may be considered a signing bonus, and is on a team's books even if they release the player.  Signing bonuses are guaranteed money!
  • International players must have an MLB contract before he can be bid on or signed as an FGM free agent.
  • Bids cannot be edited under any circumstances.  Editing a bid will render it invalid.  Should an issue requiring an edit arise, contact the league moderator(s) via PM to get adequate resolution.

Trades
  • Trades must be posted by all GMs involved in the trade all in one thread.  Each GM shall post a rationale with reasons for negotiating that particular trade.

A player who is subject to a 60 day trade moratorium cannot be traded.  The Trade Moratorium includes:
      1)  A Free Agent signed from the free agent pool, whether in the off-season or in-season;
      2)  A player drafted in the FGM FYPD;
      3)  A player who is signed to an extension, whether in the off-season or in-season.

Extensions
  • After the World Series, there is a flux period until the start of free agency where you must always stay under the cap, yet you still retain the rights of players who had contracts ending at the end of the last season.  The team holds the players rights temporarily because they can choose to extend a player's contract, or release them to FA.
  • Commissioner will verify all contract extensions as soon as possible.  In-season contract extensions may change in value from one day to the next.  Extensions are valued as of the date the commissioner approves the deal.

Check your official roster!
Please check your official roster before making transactions, so you not only know which players you have, but how much cap room you have available.  Several rules were changed before free agency started, so I want everyone to be aware of this before they start bidding on players.

Transaction Forum Setup
  • All pending transactions are under the main Transactions forum.
  • Any transaction that is completed for bidding or approval, but needs a contract decision by the GM, or is awaiting processing will be pinned to the top of the transaction forum
  • Once transactions are completed by the commissioner, they will be moved to the completed transactions forum once done.
  • Any move deemed invalid or erroneous will be in the Invalid forum.

  • Jwalkerjr88: And brent a tear down with you assets would look interesting. Personally i just think you need break one big asset down into 3 good ones and move carr and go from there. But you have an A1 nfl mind so im sure you will nail whatever it is you decide

  • Brent: Thank you.  Yes, I agree.  I do need to break one asset down to 3.  I did that with JJ, went from S tier to 2 A tiers.  Now I need to potentially go from an A tier to 3 Bs or something like that.  I've had some inquiries on Carr, but nothing worth moving him.
