Amnesty Buy-out Proposal
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:47:35 PM »
I have been quietly thinking about this discussion and have come to a conclusion that has real merit.

It is important to acknowledge in a substantive way that a number of GM's made very difficult choices in order to square their rosters before an amnesty buy-out was announced. Due to their foresight and shrewd management it follows that these same rosters may not be in need of an amnesty buy-out prior to the 2013-14 season.

Granting the one-time amnesty buy-out as a certificate rather than as a grace period would allow these GM's to carry it forward and apply it at a future date (as long as it wasn't for a player granted an extension in that particular season). In other words let us use the buy-out "anywhere" and "anytime". Or at least at the correct time in any future season.

This would balance the benefits received by the GM's who haven't sacrificed against the future needs of those who have.

Only problem I have is that this isn't going with what the NHL is doing. They have to have their buyout done before the 2013-14 season and aren't allowed to use it there after so therefore I don't believe we should have this option either.

I thought you might say that. My take is that I really don't think any NHL GM's made preemptive sacrifices to get under a projected cap number as they have allowances to temporarily go over the cap anyway. Something that we in Backyard cannot do.

Anyway, following what the NHL does isn't a strong argument when you consider that we had a poll to adopt the measure in the first place and that nearly half the league voted against it. If it had of been voted down how closely would we have been following the NHL then?

With that in mind I'd say this isn't an issue of real-world emulation so much as it is of fantasy fairness. Have a heart Drew.

I don't think this should have been voted on in the first place.  If the league looks to mirror the NHL, then we should have one buyout and it should have to be used within a year

Um....if we're going to "mirror" the NHL there are a couple of other issues we might want to discuss. I'm thinking new minimum player salaries, RFA's and UFA's, compensatory draft picks, and contract variability. Oh, and have we eliminated re-entry waivers yet??

Again as we do most things here I think if people thinks this has any traction then it would go to a vote. Right now I don't think it really needed to be extended. Almost every team has a bad contract, over-paid player, who knows who might retire, or a minor leaguer they want to get rid of. But obviously decisions will have to be made:
:WIN: - Riemer/Weber
:TOR-NHL: - Chara/Thomas
:NAS: - Staal/Pitkanen
:OTT: - Kesler/Havlat/Thornton/Boyle
:NYR: - Booth/Yandle
:VAN: - Daley/Gaborik
- ok I am done haha. As you can see each team has a couple that they can look at and can buyout if they wish to spend their money another way. This will also expand the free agency market for this off-season as well so it isn't like these bought out players will be out of a job for long.
I also think if we keep this thing around for more than 1 off-season then teams will keep them in their pocket as a get out of jail free card. Some player has a season ending injury (they use it), they spend 10m on Riemer in FA (they use it). GMs have to be respond for their decisions.

I wasn't in favour of the buyout (and I have Burns who isn't doing anything this year) but it was voted in. I knew some GMs wanted to get out of contracts more then being worried about their cap for the next year, this is why I wouldn't allow it before the 2nd extension period as all teams were under cap going into next season. Anyway just discussion but if others are in favour we can take it to a vote.

I also wasnt a huge fan of the buyouts but can see why it went through, but I think the way we have it now with 1 buyout this year is fine. Don't want it dragged on too long like drew said it can be a crutch going forward

I'm on board with this....wasn't trying to start an argument. Just goofey for fantasy hockey nuts and bolts.

Anyhow....when are we dropping re-entry waivers??

I wouldn't be opposed to the discussion of RFA/UFA though haha. I think it is an interesting topic if done right but obviously whole league would have to be on board as well.

I hate re-entry waivers and I feel that we need to get rid of them too. This would get rid of the need for a free call up period and it would match the real life NHL.

And I honestly do not see how we could do RFA/UFA without disrupting the balance of free agency. If anyone has a good suggestion, I would be open eyes (as I cannot hear what you are saying).
