NY Islanders Prospects

This first group is players that will spend a lot of time with their NHL club
Emil Bemstrom - He was my 2019 1-11 pick. After leading the SHL in goals this last year (23), he has been with the Blue Jackets all year but they are babying him with 4th line minutes so hope next year he will get better usage.
update 3/31/20 - in his last 8 games he was getting better ice time and had 5 goals in those 8 games. hope he can continue this next year.

Carl Grunderstrom - He was my 2016 keeper. After being traded to LA from Toronto he played in 15 games. He had a 2.2 FP/G with a 14.5 TOI. Im hoping he can win a 3rd line spot with LA this year and continue his development.
Update 2/28/20 Im a little surprised he has not any real time with the big club. maybe next year.

Ryan Poehling - Picked him up in a trade during the 18/19 season. At the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship this year, he led all North American skaters with five goals and eight points in seven games. In his NHL debut, he scored a hat trick followed by a goal in the shootout. He only played the last game of the season for Montreal but it was a good one. He has a chance to stick the whole season with Montreal but they might move him to wing.
update 5/11/20 he was hurt in training camp and never got it going after that. hope he can do better next year.

This next group is players that will be in the AHL with a good chance to get time with the big club.

Jeremy Bracco - He was my 2015 keeper. He scored 79 points in 75 games in the AHL last year in his second season. If he continues where he left off he should see some time in Toronto this year.
update 5/11/20 its not looking like they will ever have room for him in the parent club.

Joachim Blichfeld - He was my 2019 mid 3rd round pick. The combination of Blichfeld’s frame, attitude, and the fact he won the WHL’s scoring title will mean he is pretty much a lock for the Barracuda. He will battle it out with a number of promising forwards hoping to get a look at the NHL soon. Having a good year in the AHL and is getting call ups but not really get much playing time in the NHL. finished with 32 pts in 44 AHL games.

Rasmus Sandin - He was my 2018 keeper. He had a good year in his first yer in the AHL and is Toronto's best D man prospect. He should see some time in with the big club this year.

Alex Barre-Boulet - He was my 2019 1-18 pick. Tampa's top prospect, was a C in the QMJHL and scored over a point per game. In his 1st year in AHL he was one of the top scorers with 68 points in 74 games. should see some time in Tampa this year.

Ivan Chekhovich - He was my 2019 1-19 pick. The Russian sniper finished an impressive QMJHL career with 224 points in 191 games. Chekhovich capped off the year with a short AHL stint, posting four points in five games. He showed well in pre-season and training camp with the Sharks last year and there is no reason to believe he will not do the same this season. The Sharks may give him a longer look at the NHL level this season.

Prospects 1-3 years away from playing in the NHL.

Boris Katchouk - He was my 2018 late 1st round pick. In his 1st year in the AHL he had a limited role in a stacked Syracuse lineup. Katchouk has mostly found himself in Syracuse’s bottom six, more specifically their fourth line. Im hoping Tampa will have a couple of call ups and he can win 2nd line minutes.

Kirill Marchenko - He was my 2018 mid 2nd round pick. He capped off his inaugural KHL season with a bang. After a disappointing silver medal at this year’s WJC, the 19-year-old reported back to St.Petersburg only to catch fire. Despite limited minutes, he would finish the regular season with 10 points (four goals and six assists) through the remaining 12 games, including a respectable plus-eight rating. He reiterated his sound performance in the playoffs, posting five points (three goals and two assists) in just four games. Looks like he will not be coming over for 2 more years.

Dmitry Sokolov - He was my 2018 early 3rd round pick. His shot has been able to play up to the AHL and is more than likely ready for the NHL. The rest of his game however needs work. For the range of short comings that Sokolov has, having the ability to change a game with one shot is a valuable tool.

Joel Teasdale - He was my 2019 mid 2nd round pick. He continues to elevate his game and captures MVP honours as he led his team, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, to beat the Halifax Mooseheads in the Memorial Cup. His offensive momentum continued steadily in the QMJHL playoffs where Teasdale finished first in scoring with 14 goals and 34 points in 20 games. Knee injury in the begining of the year has set him back so hope he can get back to form next year.

Simon Holmstrom - He was my 2019 keeper. Holmström is an excellent playmaker from the wing. He has very good vision, and he can make crisp passes. He also has a great shot which makes him a dual-threat. He’s a very talented skater who combines speed with agility.

Shane Bowers - He was my 2018 late 2nd round pick. Smart, fast centerman who can be dangerous from anywhere. This year is important as he will transition from college to the AHL. It was looking like he was a bust but he is turning it on lately so hope it continues.
update 7/26/20 Bowers missed three weeks with an upper-body injury, but has erased any worries by tallying 7 points in 8 games since returning. Not only is he putting up points at the rate we hoped for from the first-round pick, but he’s doing with consistency (he has hit the score sheet in 6 of 8 games since his time missed, not just fluffing his totals in blowout contests). This is a much-needed hot streak for the rookie pro and if he can sustain it for a significant amount of time, he may find himself as one of the more offensively-capable call-up options for the Avs sooner rather than later.

Michal Teply - traded for him in the OEL deal. Teplý could be described as poor man’s Patrik Laine – he’s a big goal-scoring winger with a right-handed shot, has a great selection of shots, has an amazing release, is capable of making plays, his skating looks a bit clumsy, he isn’t consistent from game to game, and his defensive game isn’t very good.
Update 7/26/20 After posting a fantastic first season in the WHL for the Winnipeg Ice, Teply has signed an entry level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 2019 fourth round pick stayed hot from a positive showing at prospects camp through the start of the WHL season and never slowed down. A big bodied, highly skilled forward, Teply fills the net regularly using a deceptively hard shot that he can release anywhere between the two face off dots. Some seasoning is required but his ceiling is quite high.

Goaltenders

Ilya Sorokin - Picked him up in a 2019 trade. Sorokin has been shutting down the KHL for his entire career.
update 7/26/20 Eight hours after NHL teams were allowed to negotiate with unsigned draft picks, the Isles landed their No. 1 prospect. Ending months of speculation, Sorokin left the KHL for a one-year deal with a $925,000 AAV. It’s a typical contract for 24-year-olds, although Sorokin is atypical after five spectacular campaigns for CKSA Moscow, capping his tenure with a 1.50 GAA and .935 save percentage. The 6-2 athletic, butterfly-style stopper can join the Islanders’ now-underway training camp, but is ineligible for the playoff tournament. Signing his pact now lops a year off his entry-level deal and allows him to become an RFA next year.

Kaapo Kahkonen - Picked him up in a 2019 trade. He has been very good in the minors, earning an AHL All-Star nod and then receiving the Top Goaltender award at the AHL skills contest. The transition to North America has been seemingly seamless for the Finnish goaltender. He should be the #1 in the AHL this year and maybe see time in the NHL soon.

Danil Tarasov - He was my 2017 3rd round pick. He was considered one of the top goalie prospects in Russian hockey when he was drafted. He lacks professional experience so do not expect to see him with the Blue Jackets this fall. With this news, he could debut in the AHL with Cleveland or be loaned to the KHL. Both destinations will serve him well and accelerate his development.

Josef Korenar - He was my 2019 late 2nd round pick. Korenar had a great start to the AHL season, leading to his selection as an AHL All-Star a promising first professional year for the Czech goaltender. Expect Korenar to get the bulk of the starts for the Barracuda next season and possibly get into an NHL game or two.
