Our rules governing Prospect Extensions are a little ambiguous at the moment.  You can review our rules as presently written at this link:

http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=176015.msg844709#msg844709

I am offering this poll to our league members in an attempt to get some clarification for future extensions.  The clause you are voting on is utilized in Franchise GM and works quite well.  As a member of that league, everyone has a clear understanding of when the extensions will go into effect because it stipulates a particular timeline.  Our rules do not have such a stipulation, and therefore, it is subject to interpretation.

I fully support the implementation of the rule.  No comment is required, but please offer one if you believe it helps clarify your vote.

So this clause considers "the following season" to be 2016 and not 2015 correct, as was shown in your example with Christian Yelich?

As it stands right now, with the rule as it is presently written, my interpretation is that 2016 would be the following year.  If this clause is adopted, then the Prospect Contract is replaced by the extension immediately because 2015 becomes the following season.

My interpretation of the present rule is based on the fact that if a player with a 2015 contract is given an extension right now, it would not cancel out the 2015 contract, it would be added onto the length of the contract--with the starting point being 2016.

Before I vote, just wondering, what is the rule on extensions for players not on PC?
Say I have player x, and in the middle of the season, he's been hurt and he was out all last season, thus, I know he's going to be a low resign value player, and I ink him to an extension. That extension begins the following year, correct?

---
and i nthe matt carpenter extension example, if Minnesota waits till say the day after opening day, then he would be able to get this extension done for 5 yrs at that new rate + the .3 of the current year?

In your first example, you have to consider the current year (which would be a low rank because of his injury) and the previous year (where he could be a high rank).

Here is the rule:
"You may only extend a player's contract in their final year, however, the new contract must be no less than 50% of the current deal and will not take effect until the following season.  Teams have rights to players (whose contracts just ended) in the off-season until either the player is prematurely released or off-season FA starts. Any extension that is made, will start the next year."

In the second scenario, if the extension was given during the season it would begin the following season.  It would be a five year contract at a reduced rate of the player's current market value--with a minimum contract of $4.0m.

Our poll deals with prospect extensions given during the off-season.

This is the norm.  The benefit of extending them early is the %, but the extension starts the following year of the current season.  So a P-2015, P-2016, P-2017 extended in 2015 would all start the new "Extension" contract in 2016.

"No matter what the current prospect contract is, the prospect extension kicks in the following year at the rate based on when the contract is given."

This will be added to our Rules regarding Prospect Extensions.

  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL

  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.
  • Brent: postured
  • Jwalkerjr88: Yea nailing drafts and some key FAs helps too. But if you remember BAB you traded alvin kamara for the rams 1-7 draft picks. So the extra picks helped you nail the 2023 draft the way you did
