Salary Cap Increase - Rookie Extensions
« on: August 18, 2022, 10:24:43 AM »
I know salary cap isn't an issue for most teams, but I wanted to see if overall scoring has gone up in our league since we started a static cap.  Player salaries are directly tied to their production it seemed to make sense then that our cap be tied to league production.

We started at $95m and our baseline was the 19-20 season.  All the players total scored 84,785.2 fantasy points in a season that had 17% less games     84,785.20 x 1.17 = 99,198.68

The 2020-2021 season all the players total scored 71,985.55 fantasy points in a season that had 46% less games = 71,985.55 x 1.46 = 105,098.90

The 2021-2022 season all the players total scored 114,973.1 fantasy points

So we are giving out contract extensions to players scoring about 16% more points, but with the same amount of cap.

Also, I feel like our rookie extensions should be brought down to at least 2-3 years.  5 years is just too long to have them on bridge deals any more.

And, this is what I do when there is no hockey news..........

for the years with less games we had adjusted the multiplier to make up for the less games played. I know for my team I have plenty of cap this and next year but when my good players come off their rookie deals I was going to be over the cap if I resigned them so I traded 1 of my top players because of it. I think we talked about waiting 4-5 years to see if adjustments need to be made

what I do, and what everyone should think about doing is a spread sheet going out 5-6 years, has all my players contract values each year. the years after their contract expires I use there last years points to calculate what their extension would be and put that in so I can approximate what my cap will be 5-6 years out

The multiplier was for calculating player salaries.  I was looking at teams' overall salary cap.  With scoring going up in the NHL, and our league, if our salary cap stays static there will either be proportionally less available money to use to extend players as we go along, or it will turn into what is happening in ProDNHL where free agents are getting much below their actual value because folks extended all their players and have no remaining cap.

Mostly this was more about me being bored.  Just something to keep track of as we move along with our current salary system.

I just worry that the sample size is too small and the two shortened years are contributing to anomaly.  Part of the point of the change was to force more players into FA - which according to your math should be happening.  I'd like to see another year of numbers - and another year of FA to see how things settle in.

Decreasing the prospect window would only contribute to this squeeze - and utilizing those deals is the strategy against the squeeze.  So I think this only enforces the strategy we're going for here and I'm not sure a change is needed.  If we were to adjust cap - then maybe.
