Nationals trade:
MI Gordon, Dee, $10.5m (2021)

Yankees trade:
OF Heyward, Jason, $4m (2017)
CI Ortiz, David, $7m (2018)
CI Moss, Brandon, $3.5m (2018)

With Chase Utley approaching retirement and with the Yankees looking to the future Dee Gordon is an able replacement .  Losing Heyward hurts but the salary savings helps fund the trade.

In the continuing quest to help reshape the Nationals roster, this trade will add an everyday OF in Jason Heyward, and improve the bench by adding Brandon Moss.  The Ortiz contract will be bought out as soon as the amounts drop to 75/50/25, so his contract will not impact the Nationals cap after this year.  The Nationals will also get some cap relief by trading away Gordon's $10.5m (2021) contract in that Heyward's extension, and Moss' contract, will not add up to that amount. 

The Yankees can afford such a contract, the Nationals cannot, but each team is filling an area of need.
