This trade was agreed to prior to the FYPD and before Ohtani signed with LAD. I've got the cap space to take on Ohtani's salary and want to build around him for the future of the franchise. I won't be competitive in 2024 so this deal is more about 2025 and 2026. Looking forward to taking this team from the scrapheap to contention.

Houston confirms.

This deal was indeed discussed prior to the draft, and Crews was our desired target.
In addition, this offers Houston some wanted cap relief headed into free agency where we plan to go after a couple of high quality players.
