Even though there is discussion to do away with this particular rule, it is, in fact, still in place. Therefore, before the rule is done away with, the Padres are going to post this restructure of Yadier Molina's contract.
The rule states:
Annual salary after such restructuring must be $4m+. ($7.0m)
Restructuring allows annual salary to be reduced if player's market value (extension price) is less than or equal to half that of what he is paid. ($15.0m - $7.0m = $8.0m less)
Total reduction in salary is converted into a guaranteed signing bonus during the current (or upcoming for off-season) year. ($8.0m Guaranteed Signing Bonus)
Restructuring of contracts is not allowed during the period after the trade deadline and before the off-season.
It is now the off-season, so the prohibition period is over.
C Molina, Yadier, $15m (2017)
Highest rank is #4 in 2016 = 4 C Lucroy, Jonathan $7.0
This extension amount is "less than or equal to half that of what he is paid". ($8.0m less)
