Minnesota does this deal to pick up a couple of late draft picks this year. We have spots on our minors open so this will be easier then trying to sign guys in FA. Boston had a couple extra picks and they get a future pick for ones they wouldn't use.
St. Louis does this trade to pick up a future pick. We are running out of space on our roster for younger players so get a future pick and keep some spots open for FA.
