Contract Extension Assistance
« on: January 26, 2024, 04:38:22 PM »
Being new to this league I need some questions answered on contract extensions to better manage my roster and salary cap. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

#1 - If a MLB player under the contract column has a 6th entered then he must be offered a contract extension during the month of November following the upcoming season to prevent him from becoming a free agent, am I correct?

#2 - If a MLB player under the contract column has 2025 am I too assume that his contract expires after the 2025 season or does it expire after the 2024 season and I have to offer a contract extension during the month of November following the 2024 season?

#3 - If a minor league player under the contract column has a 1st entered and I keep him on my roster after the season ends, then the following season the player will have a 2nd entered under the contract column and this will continue to advance until he completes his 5th season in the minors unless I release him?

Yes, any player that is in 6th year can be extended after the 2024 season before I roll it over.

It expires at the end of the current season.  If this is something I need to look into to make sure that it is better understood by everyone I can certainly do that.  But all 2025 expires at the end of this current year.

#3 - If a minor league player under the contract column has a 1st entered and I keep him on my roster after the season ends, then the following season the player will have a 2nd entered under the contract column and this will continue to advance until he completes his 5th season in the minors unless I release him?

Not necessarily.  The player will not go into his 2nd year until he makes his initial MLB debut.  Once he makes his MLB debut then the clock will tick on him and each year he will gain eligability.

With regards to the contract year 2025 as I first read it my assumption was that the contract expires after the 2025 season. With your explanation I know your scheme and and my confusion is gone.

As the the minor league player with a 1st under the contract does he advance to 2nd when I move him to my MLB roster or when he actually appears in a MLB game and the system tracks the advancement in years?

in regards to minors, the players do not start accumulating years until the first year that they make it to the majors.  Thats when the clock starts for them

  • ldsjayhawk: @jwalker I make like 2-3 trades a year for each of my baseball teams, maybe.  I'll tell you part of the reason I don't trade.  Every trade discussion starts out with the other team wanting my top prospect regardless of what I am trading for.  I am not trading Jackson Holliday for your backup catcher who is going to play 20 games this year.
