For anybody interested in how I've been trying to figure out the optimal points to assign to each stat category, this is the spreadsheet I've been using.

The first three worksheets are the combined stats for all 30 teams in MLB from 2001 to 2010 in batting, pitching and fielding. The last worksheet is the one where I'm tinkering with point values for this league. The point of this exercise is try to ensure we have the right balance and don't accidentally create a league where one type of player is severely overvalued or undervalued.

No penalty for blown saves, or points for Ks for pitchers.

Check out this pitching line: 7 innings, 6 hits, 3 walks, 6 K, 2 ER, loses 3-2.

Calculation: 7X3=21, Minus 3 for walks, 6 for hits, 2 for ER, 5 for loss = 5 points for a pretty well pitched game.

To get to the target of 36%, I'd suggest adding 1 point for Ks, and 2-3 points for a quality start.

Also, 2 or 3 point deduction for a blown save.

Sorry, I thought I had posted the revised system but it appears I have not.

I added K's and Blown saves for pitchers. I did not add quality starts because it would in effect by double counting earned runs allowed and innings pitched.

Just for reference, in the batting category, are walks counted in total bases?  Or are they not included at all?

Honestly, it will most likely depend on how the scoring service will do it. I'll check with Fantrax to see what it is for this upcoming season. It may change if we switch services.

If you lay down a bunt, the catcher throws it clear over the first baseman's head and you get to 3rd, that's two total bases.

Would not that be an error on the catcher, so you get nothing? I guess depending on the situation, maybe you could get a sacrifice?

From my understanding of total bases, it doesn't matter how you get to the base, its still a "total base"..  But I could be wrong.

For all of the statistical websites (not necessarily Fantasy Baseball Scoring Services) total bases is simply the number of bases obtained by a hit.  TB = 1B + (2B*2) + (3B*3)+(HR*4).  I haven't previously played in a league that used total bases, but I just started in another league that uses TB and BB as separate categories. 

In my mind these are completely separate.

I just checked the other league's Fantrax page.  I looked at Carlos Beltran and he had 273 in both Fantrax and Baseball Reference.  So, TB = 1B + (2B*2) + (3B*3)+(HR*4) is correct.

i.e. Carlos Beltran TB = 89+(39*2)+(6*3)+(22*4) = 273
