for AJ Piersynski 2014-2017 - $3.6M per

We keep Flowers as our starter, get what will be 2 prospects toward the re-build and gain $3.6M to spend on Free Agent signings.
All in all we are happy. Was a pleasure doing business with the Rays, especially because I got counter offers rather than just a "no"

Rays confirm this deal....while I don't want to make it a trend giving away prospects and picks for aging players, I felt it was important to lock up a second catcher who will produce.  I enjoyed working with the White Sox on this deal and wish them the best as they look to rebuild.

I'm not a fan of this deal.  A high school pitcher with no mechanics taken in the 12th round and a 4th round pick don't qualify as prospects in my book.  Pierzynski  should have a great deal more value than that. 

That being said I'm withholding my vote, I want to hear more from the White Sox as to what they see in Clifton, who is key to the deal.

Pierzynski is definitely a steal for this season, but he is a 37 year old catcher that probably won't have a guaranteed starting job after this year. By 2017, he will almost definitely have no value. Not a lot in return, but I can see why it was done for a rebuilding team with a catcher,  :iatp:

To play devil's advocate.... a 4th round pick is pretty nice.  I picked up Stephen Gonsalves with my 4th round pick this year (granted, I did have the 1st pick of the 4th round).  But also, factor in the nearly $4M in cap savings.  On the free agent market, that's buying you a very nice prospect or two, plus lets you off the hook for the albatross years of Pierzynski's contract.

I think the Sox could've gotten a little more for AJ, but it's not as bad as you make it sound.  I do hate to see my division rival improve, though.

It may seem little to get for AJ considering how valuable catchers are but considering the contract could be dead money the last couple years I think it's pretty fair. Makes sense for both sides considering where they are on the win curve.
