Yoenis Cespedes ($12m 2016)

The Rockies fire sale comes to an end (hopefully). Ultimately I had to choose one more big earner to remove from my roster (seeing that I only have $4m to fill quite a few spots) and seeing that no one is going to take Matt Cain, on a serious offer, I felt that Cespesdes was my best option. Having put him on the trading block the Rays were the only team to show a prolonged interest. Thus while I hate to lose Cespedes I get a goodish IF to help fill a roster spot, a recognised SS prospect and high draft pick next season to continue the rebuild. Plus, and this is probably the most important part, I get to free up $11m of salary cap in time (hopefully) for FA bidding!

I can understand that some may potentially see this trade as a little one sided, however it is important to recognise what a tight salary financial situation the rockies are in and that the clock is very much ticking in respect of FA.

Rays confirm this deal.  Although the salary I take on with Cespedes puts me tight against the salary cap and perhaps forces my hand to make another deal, I feel Cespedes contract is reasonable.  I understand the salary constraints that the Rockies are under and hope that this deal helps give them the wiggle room they need.  Thanks to Chris for a nice negotiation.
