Jorge Soler is a free agent though
« on: February 15, 2012, 11:44:50 AM »
He is just like any other free agent in the system.  This is like me signing Eckstein last year, he didn't play and didn't end up with a contract, but I flew a flyer on him because there was talk of a contract.  I think he's trying to comeback this year too but that's besides the point.  I would just like a little elaboration as to why he is different.  He will clearly be playing in the minor leagues this year.

Follow up, Raul Ibanez should also be unavailable by the standard.

We cover this time and time again, if an international player has never had a mlb contract, you can not post them until they sign the initial contract.  This has been a standard in this league and at this site for a couple years now.

Example Iwamua was supposed to sign with Oakland last year.  Oakland paid his club in Asia for the right to sign him.  They did not work out a deal and he signed this year with Sea.  He was not allowed to be signed in FGM last year because he was expected to sign.

Entry Draft Roster (EDR) - rule 6
Only players eligible for the MLB Entry Draft will be eligible for the Franchise GM Entry Draft - foreign players and unprotected prospects will be handled via free agency (however foreign players may warrant consideration for an additional rule)

Here is my research and the only rule about the subject.

There is no rule and they are simply free agents.  There may want to be a rule later, but there isn't now.

It is a bad interpretation of our rules then.  What rules do we actually follow and which ones do we not?  We should follow the rules in the book and we wouldn't have this conversation.  There is no reason a team should not be able to sign a guy before he signs a contract.  Why do we allow this for old bums that might never play again but not for a guy who is clearly entering the market?  And if the foreign player never reaches the MLB market, oh well...it's my mismanagement for picking him up.  It hurts nobody.  The rule was solid before and has been manipulated into something that is confusing.

We have been through this since the league started...someone must have or had an MLB contract prior to be posting. Draft eligible players who did not sign can be given a contract at an inflated price during the draft and that is it. Soler is unavailable to be bid on, until he has a MLB contract in hand.

This is also not open for debate. This has been covered by anyone who has paid attention. We are not going down this rabbit hole again.

Please tell me why, i would like to know why.  To insult my questions with the down talk really makes me wonder why there cannot be an open discussion.  So just tell me the WHY the rule was changed...or if it has been so for ages, why the rules were never rewritten.  These are valid questions.

Limiting people to players that have had a contract (Major or Minor League) with a professional MLB team is reasonable.  This is the most straight-forward approach that anyone can find.  As an administrator of a league we do not believe that anyone outside of this qualification is worth the league administration time.  It opens up way too many possibilities.  We do not have time to research additional international players.  This has been discussed time and time again.

I wasn't being insulting...we have been here, we have moved on...He is by MLB's standards a International Free Agent, which is something this league does not have. Once he becomes a MLB free agent it is all fair game. But until that time he is look don't touch. Otherwise we would have had guys bidding on Darvish the first year of the league.

To continue arguing a point is just rabble rousing in my opinion. So please to forgive my lack of tolerance. You have been here long enough to know how we do things.

I just wanted to get to the SB and figured at that point anything can happen and lucky for me, my boys had enough left to take out BAB. Live is the most challenging league I’m in and most fun, so thanks for what you all do to make it that way.
