Possible new rule- 1 year extensions
« on: July 15, 2022, 05:57:26 PM »
We already have a rule in place where if you sign someone in FA to a 1 year deal, they are ineligible for an extension and will back to FA the following year. This post is to gauge reception to also making this rule included extensions. Meaning if you extend someone for 1 year, they automatically go to FA the following season. This would only impact future extensions, not ones already made.

This is mainly to make it more realistic as players usually only accept 1 year deals as a provide it deal to hit the open market the next year for a bigger payday. And it would possibly make FA more exciting each year if better players hit FA.

Please post your thoughts.

I've probably taken advantage of 1-year extensions more than anyone. I extended Donovan Mitchell for 1-year when I needed the RFA 1.2 multiplier, then extended him to a longer term deal the year after.

That being said I think the rule totally makes sense to have to extend someone for at least 2 years. It certainly changes the strategy a bit. I think it will be good for the league and great for league parity as teams can't hang onto their stars as easily in some situations. Anything that increases league parity and helps the worse team is something I will gladly vote for. If it comes up to a vote I would vote for a minimum of two years to extend anyone (free agent or already on your team) if you want to be eligible to extend them again.

Since 1 year deals are typically the prove it deals, make it where if you sign a player to a 1 year deal then the following season you have 2 choices: sign them to a max deal or let them walk.

Can e up the RFA multiplier to say 1.6 or 1.8, so if that team wants to try using th 1 yr RFA tag, it costs more upfront. Possibly acting more as a 'challenge' to that owner to decide on th tag then long-term deal.
OR
Make the 1 yr deal players an auto max or walk type deal.

Everyone trying to penalize GMs who draft well or can evaluate talent better than others.  FA is for people who can't draft and have to rely on players already proving their worth.

The RFA multiplier is not increasing. This isn?t going to be some complicated thing like every single rule proposal becomes.

This is going to be straight forward if it?s put in place. 1 year extensions will automatically go to FA the following year. No special caveats or anything like that.

As stated, it?s a proposal to make things more realistic and make you really think about it if you want to lock that player up for multiple years or take the 1 year and let them go.

Being the new guy I am still trying to figure out the rules and see how everything plays out, so I am good with whatever.

With that said, could we possibly change the drop player penalty to simulate the NBA more realistically by doing the stretch provision or would that be too difficult to keep track of?
