Extensions and covid/shortend season
« on: July 28, 2020, 07:12:44 PM »
Hmmm,  I will have to get up to speed on this new extension idea.

Snug, it's awesome that you're taking the baton from Rob.

When you get around to it, something you'll want to think about regarding the new extension method:  how a player's fantasy points from the truncated 19/20 season should be used for purposes of extension values ... such as, maybe, extrapolating the player's truncated-season point total to a total that represents a full 82 game season.

A little wrinkle we might want to go with is if the player had a season ending injury to not then extend them over an 82 game value.  In my opinion the new extension rule is easier than before and each GM can calculate it by looking on Fantrax instead of having a master list.  Then also they can put a note that the player had a season ending injury and wasn't going to accrue more points for clarity.

Higher value between 2018 or 2019 with modified schedule
Extension Value =  $25,000 x 2018 Fpts scored   OR   $25,000 x (2019 Fpts scored + ((82 - games remaining for that player) x (Fpts per game)))

There aren't normally that many extensions.  I can help anyone do theirs.

if your going to be fair about it you either have to do fp/g x 82 for everyone all the time or factor in all game lost to injury not just the ones that had season ending injury.

there is also games not played for other reasons you need to factor in. I assume you would want to have accurate salary calculation for all circumstances not just for a shortened season and season ending injurys.

I will take a look at this and run a few scenarios in the different cases.  This season will be a bit of anomaly either way.

So here is my thought.
Most teams played 70 games so 4/5ths of the season.  so lets say rounded % wise 20%    25000 x 20% = 30000

With that in mind,
19/20 seasons numbers should be multiplied by 30000

18/19 seasons numbers should continue to use 25000

Calculate both, use whichever number is greatest.  This seems to me to be the best way to handle the deflated game numbers of 19/20 by inflating the denominator. It would still account for players injuries without getting all complicated.

---------------

Thoughts?  Is there any holes here?

My other thought would be to use a blended method.

19/20 season use the rankings sheet

18/19 season use the x25000

Take whichever is greater.

I think this is the way to do it.  It isn't going to be as precise as other methods, but is the cleanest way that eliminates all the annoying special case players.

That was my thought.  No way will be perfect but this should get it right for about 95% of the players and the other 5% will have to be a wrinkle in the fabric.

Are we going to get to make transactions on last years salary cap before the books are rolled over?

I know when we get in the playoffs some teams release players and make moves to free up future cap space. I was planning on moving Berglunds and Perry's cap hits for 20/21 into this year but was waiting until the playoffs to see if I got eliminated early and what not (There was a chance Tarasenko might have came back so was keeping room for him if I needed help in the finals). That all got derailed when the season got canceled.

hmmm, I thought that was done already...Let me get a timeline put together.  Anything else I might be missing?
