Regarding trading cash/cap space
« on: August 22, 2011, 02:01:26 PM »
A while ago someone had asked whether they could trade any combination of players, picks and cash and my response was 'yes'.  I hadn't really thought through how to handle the cash transaction at that point and shortly thereafter a trade was made exchanging straight up cash.  I handled this by increasing one teams salary cap and decreasing the others.  There's a few problems with this method.  For one this isn't how it's done in the NHL, teams trade cash to pay down contracts but they don't trade cap space.  Also it's hard to track.  The cash transactions that have been processed were one time exchanges but future transactions could span multiple years and there's no way for us to really keep track of this on the spreadsheet.

I'm proposing any future cash transactions must be associated with a contract.  This way the cash transaction will follow the player and we don't have to mess with the cap.  All deals that have been processed wouldn't be changed, but going forward there will be no changes to caps and at the end of the season will all be reset to $70m.  This makes things easier for us and makes more sense with how things are really done in the NHL.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks,
Rob

You could just make the money a contract. ie: $2M from BOS (2011/2012)

That entry would count as a roster spot.  I'd have to have Colby change the sheet to get that to work right.  It still seems to make most sense to have cash transactions pay towards actual contracts.  IMO.

I am guessing this could resemble what happens when you release a player and owe money on the contract. The team giving up the extra money would have the x designation next to the player saying not on the roster  but would owe the money for the life of the current contract that they are trading.

oh.. duh.  Yea that would work and make it easier to track.  Though I still like the idea of changing this anyway.

For now I implemented this new method.  So LA, CAR and CHI will see the cash exchange on their roster pages.  These are the only teams that have traded cash to this point.
