If I am following this topic correctly, you want to enhance the quality of free agents by making it harder to extend and then bid on them in free agency with less money to do so.

Well, the goal is to fix the cap. There's too much unused money out there which makes those extension decisions too easy.

yes, exactly..

The only reason for any player to go to FA in fantasy leagues is if they are too expensive to re-sign or you think you can get a cheaper option in FA.  It's not like we have to deal with player personalities, family issues, hometowns , etc that real GMs deal with, so cap issues have to be tight in a fantasy league.

What is the use of a cap if only 1 /10th of the teams are at or anywhere near it.  I dont think Rob is suggesting we push every team to the brink of bankruptcy but at least 1/3 of your league should be at, over or struggling to stay under the cap at the re-sign/extension phase each season.  Another 1/3 should be fairly comfortable but still make a couple hard decisions.  then your other 1/3 or bottom dwellers should have room to play and acquire decent players or the cast offs from the top 1/3.

Its looking like the only way to make our teams competitive is to trade all your good players for draft picks and suck tor 3 years.

To address the concern from JMtroops, I have found in leagues with tighter cap actually helps with teams not taking the tank route to rebuild.  If there is quality FA's that can be picked up by a savvy GM each season or teams are pushed a bit to make moves before losing players to FA it provides more options to rebuild and less incentive to just dump everyone and go all rookies as going all rookies would be ok until they all need extensions at the same time.

Snug's idea of making the free drop price $2m is interesting, because it would artificially eliminate cap space, but that cap can be regained at any moment, so I don't see it as a true solution.

yes and no.  Yes it still gives lots of flexibility but,,, teams that have more superstars locked into big contracts couldnt be as bigger players when going after the bargain/depth players.  This would give some strategy distance between building a team or superstars and teams without superstars would have greater buying power for the depth guys.

I think it's an interesting wrinkle but I'm not sure it will change the cap outlook.

it wont address it on its own, no.
I have done it in another league and it will eat some cap on the bottom contracts. Looking at roster makeups of the league currently,,, I think it would have minimal effect.  The biggest impact to be made will be at the league minimum.  I actually think 500k is still too low.  Our current free buyout is set at 900k ,  why not set it there or 1 mill. I dont think that is setting too high considering we still get the free buyout.  If we didnt have the buyout option I would say 500k is good.  At 1 mill , people wont hold onto players hoping they produce at some point.  200 or even 500k I can sit that player in my roster all year long and not even thing twice about it especially if they dont cost anything to drop.

That change alone could do that trick.   I wouldnt change any of the teams current players contracts but all new players would go at the new league minimum.  That would allow a slow transition in.

It may help fix some of the teams using their pro roster as a prospect holder..

Rob would you mind if I did some testing using fantrax contracts?  I want to see what teams caps would look like should we decide to move the minimum salary... It would give everyone a chance to see what it would look like without doing anything on prosfl kind of a mirror into the future...

Do you have the ability to copy the league as co-commish?

Ok, so I did a top team,  a mediocre team and a basement team just to get a baseline.  so Anaheim, Boston (eat that rob) and Colorado.

I haven't included cap hits or money received from other teams.  Boston and Colorado still have a ton of cap to play with, Anahiem would be over

Edit, Toronto, Vancouver and LA done as well.

If anyone else wants to see what their team would look like send your request.  The numbers dont always include players on IR, cap hits or cap traded.  but that is probably better since it give a truer reading.
