makes this deal to continue to fill out a little bit of a pitching staff, while gathering some big time upside for an OF definitely not part of the long term plan.  If healthy Smyly provides some potential solid innings and Kennedy could get some starts for SD, but Cartaya is the prize here.  Big time upside from a catcher doesn't come around everyday.  He's a long ways off, but the tools are there.  Thanks Flash and good luck!

Giants are hoping Dexter Fowler can rebound from his horrendous 2018 season and find the magic he had in previous seasons.  With the current  bidding wars over the available OF free agents, the Giants have found themselves priced out of the OF market.  So, trading for a fully paid OF on an expiring contract, who has the potential to do good things, makes this move a low risk, high reward trade.
