If you resign him before the trade deadline you have to use the previous two seasons.  Here is the rule:

Item AIX G-3.0
Contract extensions are based on looking up the player's highest salary per ranking by each eligible position in both the current season and the last season.  If an extension is done during the season and before the trade deadline, then the previous TWO seasons and the current season must be looked at.  In the off-season, the last two seasons will be used.

The rules contradict themselves then because this state after May 31st you use 2015 and 2016

OFFSEASON (2015-2016): 2014 and 2015 rankings are used
REGULAR SEASON, PRE-JUNE 1ST (2016): 2014, 2015, and 2016 rankings are used
REGULAR SEASON, AFTER MAY 31ST (2016): 2015 and 2016 rankings are used
OFFSEASON (2016-2017); 2015 and 2016 rankings are used

You are exactly right, they do contradict themselves.

Rick or Ernie, can you please clarify when we can do resigns for the current season and last season?  I've been waiting as its always been after the trade deadline we can use current season and last season.

Sorry, been really busy with the "honey-do" list and flat wore out come bed time.
There indeed is a contradiction that nobody, including myself, picked up on when we redid the rules.
The latest transaction to use as precedent that I recall is here:
http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=213403.msg979816#msg979816 and we used the trade deadline as the determining date. Taking that into consideration, the 2014 season would have to be part of the equation.
I might suggest that you hold off until 8/1 to resign.

Since I have been in FGM, we have always used the trade deadline as our cutoff point for Extensions and percentages related to releasing a player under contract.  The following explanation appears in our Rules regarding Extensions:

"Contract extensions are based on looking up the player's highest salary per ranking by each eligible position in both the current season and the last season.  If an extension is done during the season and before the trade deadline, then the previous TWO seasons and the current season must be looked at.  In the off-season, the last two seasons will be used."

Although the dates listed do not reflect this doctrine, we need to follow the established precedent and change the wording (dates) to reflect what we have been doing in regards to the Trade Deadline.  This is not an arbitrary change, it is a reaffirmation of what has become standard practice in FGM.

Not a problem.  I saw the dates where I did and read into the actual rule less than I should have.  I'll hold off until the deadline.
