I believe this is a bad trade for SF and bad enough to
. It really will come down to how SF would spend the roughly $15.5M they will save by not extending Harper. No player that can get close to Harper's value can be signed for that.
I don't buy the reason this is a cap move. Teixeria comes off the books in the same offseason and that more than enough provides the money available to extend Harper.
Of the prospects involved only Bird is a top tier guy. If the deal was Bird, Stephenson, and Girchuk plus another prospect it would be fair value.
Also Bryce Harper is younger than all the prospects in the trade.
