The Sox organization is pleased to announce the extension of Alexi Ogando.

As the 86th best pitcher this year he will recieve a salary of $2.5 (2014) taking effect after this year.

I could be wrong on the years its not very clear either that or i just dont get it.

Ogando is the # 86 SP but he is also the # 8 RP so his contract would be $10.5m a year for 2, 3, or 4 years.  It might be better to postpone an extension.  When the 2012 season is over he would no longer need to be extended under the RP rules if he remains a SP.

Shouldn't he lose his RP eligibilty as he did not appear in relief in 25 games?

If you do the extension during the 2012 season it is based on his stats for 2010, 2011, and 2012.  He  pitched only in relief in 2010.  At the end of the 2012 season it will be based  on the 2011 and 2012 seasons.  As long he stays in the starting rotation all year his RP rankings will not be used at the end of this season.
