So I hate to have to make this move so quickly in such a sad situation, but I don't want to end up with a cap hit next year for him. So I'll be releasing/buying out Jose Fernandez.

Being such a unique situation, and the fact that his extension hadn't kicked in yet id think I could release him under his prospect contract at no cap hit. But if that's not the case, I believe the buyout is 3M, 2M, 1M, 1M, 1M. For a total of 8M times 1.1 rounded up is 9M. So that would be the cap hit for this year.

Blue Jays Receive:
James Shields 22(2017)
Jake Peavy 7(2017)
Both fully paid in 2016 and 2017

Yankees receive:
Drew Anderson SP PHI
Nick Fanti SP PHI
Jefry Rodriguez SP WAS
Hamlet Marte C COL
Torontos 25th through 30th round picks in Amateur draft.

To be approved by Toronto and the TC

The Yankees make this deal to continue to stockpile youth. Most of the players as well as the picks are lottery tickets at best, but Shields and Peavy weren't going to do much of anything for me next year. Would have been great to lose some of the salary, but paying all of it allows a slightly better return.

Yankees make this deal to get more young talent to continue to build for the future. Werth doesn't do a whole lot for me and I save some money next year as well. Thanks for working it out with me.
