SITUTATION
9-teams currently dont have a starting goalie.
i count 5 Free Agent starting goalies up for bids... bryzgalov, crawford, anderson, vokoun, roloson... schneider isnt a starter when the season starts.
So what happens to the 4 teams that dont own a starter once the season starts... they will be short approx 350pts annually almost guaranteeing them a loss weekly.
PROBLEM
if managers cant acquire a goalie, and they are forced to lose those +350pts annually you'll potentially face a high turn over rate for managers fed up with the disparity since it takes anywhere from 1-5 yrs to wait for a goalie to mature and become an NHL starter + there are only 30 starting jobs in the NHL so a good prospect might never get a real shot to start in the foreseeable future.
FANTASY, NOT LIKE REALITY
i realize the league wants to mimic the NHL as much as possible but unlike the NHL, teams can decide to play a rookie goalie and start scoring points.
OPTIONS
have hockeyfreak6000 and Gilly already discussed this issue because it will lead to very uneven play.
has the league considered ...
- capping # of NHL goalies owned
- contract # of teams to create a larger pool of goalies available
- reduce value of goalie pts (scoring system revisions)
- etc.
-
My suggestion is to go down to 1 starting goalie spot for each team. Or we can lower the value of goalies. In a full league its hard with two goalie spots to fill. If our league was say 20 teams or so it would be easier to fill.
-
i like the rules as they are not sure why people wanna change things. u guys joined the league under the current rules why join then suggest they change.
-
for any team that owns a starting goalie (especially one from a perennial contender :afro:), the issue of a goalie shortage in a 30 team league using 2 goalies wouldnt be as relevant.
think about league play and keeping managers interested on teams missing a starting goalie...
as it stands, at least 4 teams will not own a starting G next wk leading those teams to suffer plenty of loses all season. not fun.
i would like this to work and enjoy salary cap leagues and discovering new ways to compete and win... but this league will experience higher than expected turnover if this gap in play isnt addressed.
consider this Fantasy Nightmares, Howard goes down Oct.7th... no one wants to trade you a goalie, even if they have 3-5, there is no one that can produce more than 50pts in a season left in the FA pool... then what, you start tuning out after mutliple failed attempts to acquire a starter.

Okay,
If I hadn't picked up Backess who is amazing in the scoreing format we have and Brad Richards, I could have gotten a goalie....they combined almost get 300fp's....so I give up those two and pick up Quick who has 300 something himself......it still evens out....most of the teams with starting "expensive" goalies don't have star skaters to back it...theres one team with a goalie who got over 400 fps last year but the best two skaters maybe get 100 fps.....there will be no turn around....GM's knew goalies would be expensive....Gm's know how to balance their cap and achieve the team they desire...If there was a turn around than I am happy to see those Gm's go as this is a free competative league where if you didn't come to play and be competative than don't play at all...I find few and far between for teams that are solid in EVERY position!!

thx for the fedback gilly!
it will be interesting to see how our teams fair and how the season unfolds.

Not a problem,
Just remember how the scoreing is done....David Backess > Brad Richards in this style of league......yeah goalies are a huge huge aspect, but you can still win the hole thing without a goalie, maybe not a smooth ride, but it can easily be done!!

Certainly true, and especially so in a league where there are so many roster spots, and daily lineups; you can score big points with skaters, and defenders.
If you limit goalies you immediately have to go to weekly lineup's IMO, to prevent roster streaming; which starts all kinds of new problems with injuries and etc.
I could agree to a slight point reduction however, or a decrease to one roster spot. The advantage of two goalies still exists but in a different capacity.

Cry me a river new guy. You are 25 mil under cap, if you want a goalie start spending it
Please keep everything civil folks!!

i think i can cry u a puddle if you like that sorta thing bud... to each his own eh!

I see Pigs' point, but I think it kinda comes down to your strategy... I for one will collect as many backup goalies as I can and pray to God someone gets injured! :koolaid:
Seriously, though, I think goalies need to have their points per game lowered... perhaps decrease the amount of points per save and make a shutout worth like 15 points... I think it would add another layer of depth to your goaltending decision because you'd be more willing to take a backup goalie on a team with a really good defense because the 20 or so starts he'll get a year, he has a chance to get you a shutout and earn you a ton of points all in one night...
-
All valid points guys. Im going to consider changeing the goalie system a little. But just remember a goalie is worth a lot but so is couple good scoring forwards with grit.

Dont hate on a man for bringing up a true problem for fantasy hockey, and the same for catchers in baseball. Really, your comment is useless for the purpose of the conversation.

I like it the way it is, and this being one of the GM's without a starting goalie. I think it's how you want to approach things and frankly if you are going to quit the league because you aren't willing/able/don't have the cap room to get a starter, you aren't committed to the league. If you get a bad team you have to rebuild properly.
-
like i mentioned earlier... should be interesting to see how the league plays out.
...and guys with the angry faces, ease up - fantasy play should be about havin fun. :afro:

that strategy just might be a :winner: there are definitely a few fragile types khabby, dipietro, hiller, varlamov.

I want to say that you don't need a starting goalie to win the cup look at what Drew did last year. He won it with Hiller and Harding and Hiller didn't play the last half of the year. Drew as much as I hate to see you win good job buddy :toast:
-
i noticed that, which is different and new to me in fantasy hky play. that was 1 of the reasons i wanted to play this league... to see how things go in a 30-team league where goalies are worth a lot in the scoring syst.
for discussion's sake, although you can play without a goalie... doesnt that go completely against 1 of the key principles of this league, to "mirror" the NHL as much as possible in this virtual environment. if so, i dont think you can win anything in the NHL without a goalie.
so because there's a loophole in play, i figured it would be worth while addressing, at least in discussion. :afro:

No ill intentions, just grabbing Pig's goat. Lighten up people.

... com'on, like there was really anything to yap 'bout before. :P

In all seriousness, Tomas Voukon probably shouldn't have been allowed to become a free-agent, same for Crawford and Brtyzgalov. At the end of a season if a team lacks a GM we should do something to protect their key players to prevent a shift in competitiveness, and give those players rule-mandated extensions. I know we want to spice up FA bidding, but it will help with turnover issues. With that said, we are all competitiors but this is a dynasty league, a whole process. People who want a fair shot every season are better off in 12-team rotos. I hope Pigs turns the Florida organization and things play out for him. If Tokarsky makes the Lightning I'll trade him Dan Ellis.
-
you brought up a good idea cheese, "auto-renewal" in cases where there might be manager turnover or mgr just goes awol... it was an option given the league was headed into its 1st offseason. reason being you want each team to keep its key assets which helps competitiveness of the league as a whole.
Example: in one of my keeper money leagues, 5 keepers - not dynasty like this league, i blocked 1 team from what looked like a keeper dump at the trade deadline in Yr1 because the mgr didnt act like he'd be back, not getting a young keeper in return, etc. long story short - he didnt take it well but we protected the team's assets for the next season to ensure the team's competitiveness yr-over-yr. Yr3, we removed the manager from the league for his 2yo behavior. :bump:
anyway, i am here. have already started to build a competitive team... actually a fun thing from the ground floor up. i saw most of what i was walking into. i dont take this stuff personally since we're here to kick some ass. florida will be top 15 this yr :afro: and challenge next yr! :win:
