Yes you can extend players that expire at the end of this season. Moves that take on cap in the current cap year while over the cap are the only ones not allowed.

Teams that are over the cap have always had to be under the cap by the start of the regular season. Why would a team be allowed to be over the cap while in the regular season? That should be clear and not something that has to be in the rules. We can?t have every single thing in the rules or it would be too long for anyone to read.

It?s common sense that you can?t start the regular season over the cap.

It?s no different than roster size. During regular season, you have to have a complaint roster. During off season rules are just relaxed to allow teams to start the off season over the cap and make moves to clear the cap over the course of the off season.

There are quite a few of us that didn't understand the rule that way as you yourself said in the past that there was no deadline for getting under the cap. It sounds like there is a pretty clear deadline now. There's a lot of confusion about all of this and it isn't just me. I didn't think it made sense to allow teams to go over cap in future years or be over during the offseason. It creates a lot of confusion and aids in the creation of super teams and is allowed. Being over the cap going into a season from being over the year before also didn't make sense to me, but you said yourself there was no deadline for getting under the cap so I and several others that I have talked to thought you could be over during the season as long as every move lowered the total cap. This is the first time a deadline has been mentioned that I can remember after consistently hearing that you can be over the cap as long as every move decreases the amount a team is over the cap.

I've been talking strategy with a half dozen teams in this league over the past month about getting quite a few stars fully paid this year and obtaining or signing players on long term contracts. I would be under the cap this year due to everyone being fully or partially paid, then go into future seasons with a super team that is way over cap. The downside would be that if I needed to trade I would have to decrease my cap, but I would have all long term contracts so I wouldn't need to trade. If I found I really needed to make a roster move my salaries would be so high it would be easy to decrease my cap slightly with any trade if I needed to. Every player I would have on my team would be signed to a 3-year deal or more by the end of the season so I wouldn't need to trade and could be well over cap for two years after this one without it having any affect on me. Everyone thought that was a brilliant strategy, but it obviously isn't feasible if a team has to be under the cap by the start of the season. Everyone I talked to about that strategy was also under the impression that there was no deadline to being under the cap. Having a deadline of being under the cap by the start of next season for my team vs. the strategy admitted to above with no deadline to being under the cap turns my brilliant deal for a superstar in Anthony Davis into an idiotic one year rental given my future cap situation.

I am guessing Utah and Oklahoma City also didn't realize they had to be under the cap by the start of the season. I think Oklahoma City found out he had to shed $50m by the start of the season, which is one-third of his salary so he quit. I'm not sure Utah even knows unless he reads this as Vik needs to shed $30m and has made zero attempts this offseason to decrease his cap and hasn't even set up a trade block.

A rule can be put in place to prevent teams from being allowed to go over cap in future years. Can be put to a league vote with it going in place next off season to not affect anyone that is already over the cap for any future season.

I think that would clear up a lot of confusion especially since there are a lot of unwritten rules and clarifications about that in here and the various scenarios of how and when a team can go over the cap, what they can and cannot do when over the cap, when they need to get under the cap, etc. It would also increase the competitiveness of the league.

I think that would be a great idea as well.

When the FA players will be updated in Fantrax?

I have noticed that Taj Gibson is with NY, I think this is a mistake as he should be a FA.. also, I do not see any transactions for him in Fantrax.

The deadline to resign players is June 30th. Anyone who is not extended by then will be released and the FA pool will be decided (unless of course players are released later).

He's listed on your :PHX: roster on fantrax and expired contract on the spreadsheet.

Hi league.
Could someone please explain the free drop option outlined in the "Salary Cap Structure " section in the official rules.
Is it an old rule for original managers or available to new managers like myself?
I recall a recent transaction for G Hayward which I believe used this section.
If it is possible, does it only apply to players on the originally inherited roster  or any players which may or may not have been traded for since?

That specific part of the rules was actually only for the beginning of the league to allow owners to drop a few contracts from their beginning of the league.

However, we do have a rule in place that allows a new manager of a team to drop 1 contract from their team with no cap hit (IE the Hayward release falls under this). I thought I had this listed in the rules but apparently I didn't so I will get it added for clarity. But yes, since you are new to the Raptors, you can drop a player from your roster.
