Clarifications that I want to double-check I understand correctly:
Can any player on an expiring contract be given an extension (with RFAs being slightly different as described in the rules?

For FA signings and extensions, are the ranges the required number of years or the max? For example, could someone extend/sign a player for 1 year, 20 million (which would not make any sense for an FA signing but would for an extension)?

Are G-League players still on normal contracts that just don't count against the cap (I assume so based on the rules)? Also, does the free drop for G-league rule basically mean that anyone with less than 60 games experience can be dropped with no cap hit?

Suggestion/comment on FA bidding
Also, salaries being based on total amount seems like it encourages long (and likely bad) contracts for older players a ton. It seems to me like using salary per year might be better, possibly with discounts for multiyear contracts. For example, something like paying 100% of the bid per year for 1 year, 90% per year for 2 years, ... 50% or 60% of the bid per year for 5 years. This still gives an advantage to owners willing to make multiyear deals without practically forcing long contracts for older stars. But if the total amount seemed to work well before, it might be best to keep it. My suggestion would probably require a rule restricting extensions to multiyear contracts as well to prevent high one-year contracts followed by extensions to abuse the system.

I also thought a soft cap/hard cap (min contracts, rookie contracts, resigning allowed to go over soft cap) seemed like a good idea at first, but that might just make things more complicated without much benefit.

I don't see anything else with the rules right now. They seem pretty good to me.

I don't see anything else with the rules right now. They seem pretty good to me.

1. Yes any expiring contract player will be allowed to be given an extension (provided that you have the cap space)

2. Yes, right now there is no minimum years for a high contract so $20m for 1 year is an eligible contract. The contract table just shows the minimum salary needed to get that number of years so $1m and under can only do max of 2, $1.1m or higher is needed to do 3, $5.5m or higher is needed for 4, and a $10m or higher is needed for 5.

3. Yes g-league players will not count against cap. And yes if you drop a player while in g-league, it's a free drop regardless of the contract.

4. Most leagues I've been in, use the total contract value instead of the single salary style bidding. The original version of this league did use salary bidding instead of total contract. It works both ways but I prefer the total contract style. As for the old players, since we have no minimum # of years, you could place a $20m+ bid on that FA and if you have the cap space, put them on a 1 year deal for all that $20m. I do agree that we should probably have some kind of rule to prevent high one year deals to then extend to a cheaper long term deal in the next season (my thought is incorporating an extension rule where the player has to make at least 50% of what his previous yearly salary was so if you sign someone to a $20m 1 year deal, you wouldn't be able to then sign them to a $5.5m salary for 3 years).

5. Yes imo when you start to incorporate the hard/soft caps and stuff like that, it makes it far too complicated. For rookie contracts, I'm still trying to figure out how the rookie scale should work (for 2nd round picks, it'll be $0.5m salaries). Utilizing the real life scale probably works best.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to let me know.

I had a lot of the same thoughts and questions so I am glad someone asked.

I honestly really like that this league doesn't get overly complicated with a lot of things. I think there are often extra complications that don't add a whole lot to the league.

I do really like bidding by total contact as it is a lot simpler in my opinion. I also like that it might tempt people to make bad long term contracts. I like rules that can allow people to make gambles to win the championship but have a chance at backfiring. In my experience rules like that create great league parity. If someone wants to win now it should hurt a little in the future or have the potential to hurt in the future. Just my experience.

Another question on bidding on a total contract. If I have a winning bid of $50m do I have to evenly dispense the contract into 5 years of $10m for example or can I go $5m this year,  $10m in year 2 and 3, $15m in year 4, and $10m in year 5 or something like that? Can the winning bid be spread out unevenly over the years and is there a limit to the unevenness? 4 years at 2.5m, one year at $40m?

Thanks!

Yeah I prefer to not make things too complicated. At the end of the day, a fantasy league should be designed to keep things fun while simulating that GM type of experience. But going too complicated just lessens the fun imo.

We can put that up to vote but right now, rules would be evenly distributed contracts so a $50m bid would need to be $10m each year. If it's a big deal to guys, we can vote to change it.

I like that it is evenly distributed. It keeps someone from backloading a contract to get a lot of stars now, then probably ditching the league in a few years when they only have enough cap space for three players. It also keeps it simple and easy to understand. Thank you for the clarification.

Thanks for the clarifications. Sorry, but I realized I have two more questions.

When releasing a player, do the cap hit amounts need to be in the form 75% first year, 50% second year, 25% third year if it is not all lumped in to the current year? For example, could it be paid 100% first year, 25% second year, 25% third year?

Is the extension ratings based on per-game or totals? Also, is it basketballmonster or somewhere else?

I am guessing the first option since it is simpler, but wanted to check (even though I don't plan on buying out any multiyear contracts right now). At the very guess I would assume that you can't put off paying the 75% and 50%.

Yes it is the first option. If buying out a player, you'd take all the penalty in one year. OTherwise, it's 75%, 50%, 25%.

Extensions are done thru fantrax rankings and are total rankings. So Harden would be #1 extension rank per the fantrax rankings for 2019-20.

However for this first year for extensions, we need to use a portion of the 2019-20 season since not all teams played in the bubble. For 2019-20 using extension ranks, we will use stats up to when the season stopped.

I have some questions:
- what is the deadline for communicating free drops?
- when will the free agent market open? Just a quick clarification also on free agent bid procedure. Is it an auction with visible and increasable bids or is in the form of sealed bids? For example, if I want to make a $40mn bid for Ingram, should I post a visible offer on the dedicated section in the forum? If someone offers $50mn, can I increase my offer?
- what is the best way to propose a trade to another team? Private messages, chat, a dedicated section on the forum?
Thanks a lot in advance
