Indians trade:
SP Gray, Sonny, $5.5m (2021)
Giants trade:
OF Jennings, Desmond, $4m (2017)
RP Coonrod, Samuel, $0.5m (P-n/a)
C Viloria, Meibrys, $0.5m (P-n/a)
CI Tobias, Josh, $0.5m (P-n/a)
SP Johnson, Chase, $0.5m (P-n/a)
MI Toups, Corey, $0.5m (P-n/a)
SP Santos, Michael, $0.5m (P-n/a)
A seven for one trade isn't usually what most GMs will do, but there are some factors to consider. First of all, of the six prospects included in the deal, Coonrod and Viloria are the most highly rated. Coonrod needs to develop another pitch, and overall control, or he will be converted to a RP. Viloria had a breakout season, but it's hard to tell if it is an aberration or an indication of things to come. Secondly, for the Giants, getting a SP was a priority, and I'm hoping Sonny Gray can regain his mojo after a subpar 2016. Thirdly, the Giants are using the expiring contract of Desmond Jennings to offset taking on Gray's $5.5m contract. With limited cap space, getting the Indians to take Jennings was a key to completing the deal and necessitated adding some additional prospects. Lastly, many of the prospects have been offered to in other deals this offseason, but none seem to be what other teams are looking for, so I hope I don't hear any rumblings about overpaying. Except for Toups, all were acquired as free agents and I'm confident I can find other prospects through free agency.
Indians need to confirm.
