This trade is prompted by the plethora of players on the Giants roster who are out due to injuries or COVID protocols. Giving up a prospect like Heliot Ramos for an aging player may seem extreme, but there are a few variables behind this move. First, although Ramos has shown the potential to be a good MLB player, he seems to be the baseball equivalent of Jimmy Garoppolo?great talent, always injured. He may well be a productive player for the MLB Giants, but the FGM Giants have other OF prospects to offset his loss. Second, although Joey Votto is on the downside of his career, he is still productive and his $6.0m contract is fully paid by the Royals. Like all trades, there is a risk/reward, and here?s hoping the Giants reap some rewards.

Giants are taking a chance that they will see the Carlos Carrasco of 2020 when he was the 19th ranked SP. If he can regain some of that magic, he will certainly help the Giants down the stretch. Losing Hjelle and Taylor is the cost of this gamble, but as prospects go, whether they actually make an impact on their MLB teams is filled with uncertainty. Tyler Beede is a case in point, great potential, and flashes of brilliance, but never really fulfilling his expected potential. Hopefully, Carrasco gives the Giants enough of a positive return to offset the loss of those prospects.

Giants have been looking for another MI and found one in Garrett Hampson. Tough to give up Donnie Barrels and Austin Slater, but the Giants will get a little cap relief in 2022-2024 by losing Solano?s future contract and Slater?s extension. Colin McHugh offsets the loss of Tyler Wells and probably will be a 2021 rental.

A risk/reward trade for both sides. For the Giants, acquiring Kohel Arihara is a move for 2022 and beyond. Hopefully he recovers from his shoulder injury and fulfills the potential the Rangers saw in him when they signed him. Juan Carlos Mejia showed glimpses of what could be, so both teams, the Giants and the Indians, are rolling the dice in hopes that their newly acquired player reach the levels their MLB teams projected for them.
