Nationals/Marlins trade- 7/28/26 10:43P

[DaveW]

Nationals trade:

Grayson Rodriguez SP LAA P-2026
Agustin Ramirez C MIA P-2028
Lance McCullers P MIL $7.5MM(2026) note that $1MM of the $7.5MM is being covered by another trade

Marlins trade:

Colin Rea SP CHC $2.0MM(2026)
Gary Sanchez C MIL $0.5MM(2027)

Nationals approve.  Sanchez gives me more depth behind the plate, and Colin Rea gives me a decent starter to replace G-Rod.  I've finally lost patience with Grayson, guaranteeing that he'll win the AL Cy Young next year.  And happy to be out from under McCullers' contract.

Note that the Marlins' spreadsheet apparently doesn't reflect his new GM "free drop" of Marcus Semien, so he should have plenty of cap room to get the deal done.

Thanks @Sillicards for the smooth trade discussions.  Good luck!

Dave

Thanks Dave. You were great to deal with in my first trade!

I'm looking to get younger- Rea is 36 and his contract expires. He's more useful for the Nationals in playoffs. Nats really wanted Sanchez- I didn't want to move him but had to give to get. I like Ramirez as my future Catcher (if he ever learns how to catch!) Grayson stinks really badly this year but does have tools and potential. I need to get younger and was willing to take on McCullers contract to do so. I have plenty of unused cap space for the rest of the season so the trade seems helpful to both of us.

Cheers,
Shonn- Marlins GM

This could get complicated. Cash exchanges follow the player.
