I didn't know i needed a first round pick to compete. The idea of being forced to keep it in fantasy seems like a way to prevent getting better by using them. Its July 2024. My 2027 pick isnt helping my fantasy franchise. I could be dead by 2027.
It is what it is.
Thanks for the talks. :toth:
The introduction of the Stepien Rule and two other draft pick protection rules (which you can find in the 2024/25 new rules topic) was decided after a debate sparked by observations from Wizards GM jimw, who noted that almost all of the 2024 lottery teams had traded their picks.
The idea behind the 3 draft pick rules has two clear objectives:
- Protection for bad teams. There are teams that in the past have traded for little or nothing without any protection their 2024 first-round picks, which have then turned out to be lottery picks.
- Since it is 2024 and we are not sure who will be GM in 2027, it is important to prevent teams from depriving themselves of all their draft capital. Finding a replacement manager for teams without draft capital and perhaps with few good assets is always difficult.
Therefore the intent is not to prevent teams from improving, as this is a rule that applies to all teams equally. Rather the Stepien Rule and the other draft pick protection rules are intended to help to promote parity and make the league more competitive for all teams
