I wholeheartedly believe in allowing GMs to run their teams as they see fit, but this trade is clearly ill-advised. The Nationals were in sad shape before this season because previous GMs made some very poor personnel decisions. The Nationals are in the midst of a rebuild, with patience, and a vision of the future, being key components in the climb back to competitiveness.
SP Greene, Hunter, $0.5m (P-n/a) was the #1 pick in this year’s draft. He is a blue chip rookie, who by all accounts, is a bonafide MLB talent who is #18 in the top 100 prospects. OF Plummer, Nick, $0.5m (P-n/a) is a 2015 #1 Pick who is expected to make it to the majors in 2020. Both of these players are solid building blocks, and needed by the Nationals, in the rebuilding process.
Realistically speaking, RPs are a dime a dozen, and RP Cecil, Brett, $1.5m (2018) does not even come close to being an impact player. Cecil was #70 in RP ranking and scored 8.31 fppg in 2017–he’s projected to rank #63 in 2018 with 6.48 fppg. There are going to be a lot of RPs available in free agency and giving up Greene and Plummer for Cecil is simply too much.
This is a bad trade. :veto:
