Sign-up sheet
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:33:39 AM »
This is not a typical league, but very much a mathematical experiment, so please read the rules before signing up. The purpose of this thread is not only signing up, but also a screening process for potential GM's. Understand that to have fun (and success) at this, you'll need to be familiar with how NBA contracts are constructed and/or interested in learning more about it. The idea is to make you feel like an actual GM in the long term.

Here you can always see how we stand:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AvqIcA7i9Q8CdFBsU0JqWkVJMmp4WXNqbWhhQThKT1E&gid=1
Very inactive people will be replaced first, and people with two teams are always prepared to give one to new recruits.

Please fill in all fields.

  • Favourite NBA teams: Phoenix Suns by far (Gortat, Nash, Hill, Barkley, KJ, but especially Oliver Miller :afro:)
  • Teams you'd like to manage, and why: will choose last
  • CBA knowledge: good, apart from a couple of dark corners

  • Whether you'd be willing to pay $2 per season to have a 30-teams Fantrax league: yes
  • Free agents: single secret bid, more realistic
  • D-League: not sure about the benefit
  • Scoring period: whole season, for more fairness and less management
  • Playoffs after Regular Season: strong no, see my arguments in the brainstorming thread
  • Should the GMs be individually helped by the LM regarding the less known parts of the CBA: probably not, hopefully lets everybody feel like a real NBA GM

Email address used daily (only if different): -

    Favorite NBA teams: Memphis Grizzlies
Teams you'd like to manage, and why: Miami Heat, I'd like to see how I could manage 5 other players around the three studs. I'd like to experiment to see if certain players work better over others.

Whether you'd be willing to pay $2 per season to have a 30-teams Fantrax league: yes
Free agents: open bidding if at least only in the beginning then we could vote for something more private down the road
D-League: The ability to take a chance on a young player who was kicked to the curb by his previous team. If that player can blossom in a new environment, then that's what I call being shrewd.
Scoring period: whole season to be more realistic and to pique interest
Playoffs after Regular Season: After talking it over with Daniel I feel this is not necessary as the regular season can serve the dual purpose of determining who the best team is and still function like a regular season with playoffs would in any other league
Should the GMs be individually helped by the LM regarding the less known parts of the CBA: I think so as its the duty of the league commissioner to help out managers, but after one season of play, the more veteran GM's should be able to understand the CBA fairly well

Daily Email: same
Favorite NBA Team: New York Knicks
Teams You'd Like to Manage and Why: I'd like to manage the Charlotte Bobcats. Where's the fun if you start off with a good team?
CBA Knowledge: Not very much, but I'm pretty competitive, so you can rest assured I will have learned a lot after a short period of time in this league.

Willing to pay: Yes
Free Agents: Secret Bidding by Personal Message to a designated bid receiver. IMO, this is the closest to replicating a real-life situation, where teams have to guess at each other's future transactions by assessing their possible motives.
D-League: Definitely, the more depth to the GM's role the better IMO
Scoring Period: Daily, the GM also has to be the Coach...put your best team out there every night

Playoffs after Regular Season: I'd model the whole season and playoffs after the NBA...of course to fit that schedule within the NBA's pertinent regular season (IMO, pertinent = 70 games give or take)

Should the GMs be individually helped by the LM regarding the less known parts of the CBA: No, but the CBA should be made accessible to GMs in an understandable format and the LM should be available for questions regarding possible gray spots or other concerns.

Your goals pretty much sum up what I'd like to accomplish with my three favorite sports (baseball, football, basketball) once I have a more friendly schedule (Junior year of high school is swallowing my life whole right now). I'm not totally tuned into the mathematics yet (I only had time to skim over it), but I'm certainly very interested.

Other than that, you should know I'm a very, very committed owner.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Welcome on board Jonathan!
And kudos for jumping right into that rebuilding with the Bobcats :winner:
Ladies and gents, the Rich Cho of NBA Front Office!

Playoffs after Regular Season: I'd model the whole season and playoffs after the NBA...of course to fit that schedule within the NBA's pertinent regular season (IMO, pertinent = 70 games give or take)

Do I understand correctly that you're proposing a shortened regular season (say, 50 games like in 1999) and then 4 weeks of Playoffs to declare the NBA Champions even before the real-life regular season turns into a resting&tanking farce? Very interesting point. Anyway, let's move this discussion to the brainstorming thread, shall we?
