Pirates/Twins Trade
« on: December 30, 2011, 05:31:19 PM »
Good afternoon all.  I would like to announce a trade between my Pittsburgh Pirates and the Minnesota Twins.  The deal breaks down as follows:

Pirates Give

Starling Marte
Luis Heredia
Matt Diaz
Ross Ohlendorf

for

Justin Morneau (Twins absorb salary completely)
Scott Baker (Twins absorb salary completely)

This deal provides salary relief and two components to build around to fit my needs and the Twins gain two solid long term prospects to reach their goals of building through youth.

Thanks,

Beau

Minnesota receives two prospects that they think very highly of.  We still have plenty of cap room, so we felt we could absorb these contracts if it was necessary to get a deal done.  Scott Baker is very solid #2 or #3 type pitcher who should put up solid numbers for Pittsburgh.  We have been very worried about Morneau though, on the other hand. We've watched stars like Korie Koske have their careers torn apart by concussions that they simply couldn't rebound from.  I'm not very optimistic for him, but I hope him the best because he can put up MVP type numbers when he's healthy.

As far as the prospects we received, we are very excited.  We think Starling Marte has a Andrew McCutchen upside.  He has a good combination of power and speed and will definitely be able to stick at CF.  We are also excited about Luis Heredia.  Who knows how high his upside could be.  He's just 17 years old and has loads and loads of talent and potential.  We'll see in a few years what we have in him.

The other two players Minnesota will be receiving were salary dumps for Pittsburgh.  Maybe we can put them to some use here in Minnesota.

At the time that we made the trade, I had not yet reviewed the requested style for posting trades, so my apologies on that.  After looking over the post, I guess I should also include a more detailed explanation of my reasoning for my team in making the trade as well.  The contract information is as follows:

Starling Marte (Minors)
Luis Heredia (Minors)
Matt Diaz ($2M)
Ross Ohlendorf ($2.025M, ARB, ARB)

for

Justin Morneau ($14M, $14M)    (Twins absorb salary completely)
Scott Baker ($7M)    (Twins absorb salary completely)

The Pirates are making this trade because it fits with our growth strategy.  Marte is a solid prospect, but he is still raw and comes with questionable plate discipline.  I'm higher on Heredia as a player, but he is still several years from making a contribution in Fantasy.  Diaz and Ohlendorf are both pure salary dumps.

Justin Morneau will probably never regain his MVP form, although at 31 it is entirely possible that he could regain All Star status.  I believe that the Twins will DH him this year to protect him from his concussion issues.  Baker is likewise an injury risk with high upside.

I believe that it is reasonable to expect that I could get a (.290, 25, 90) season out of Morneau with a healthy Mauer in the lineup, and if Baker comes anywhere close to his pre-injury numbers from last season he will be a great bargain.  With the Twins absorbing both salaries, I am potentially putting two successful pieces in place (as well as unloading two albatross contracts) in exchange for two upper tier but raw long-term prospects.

Going to have to veto this one. The deal would make sense if the Pirates are taken on $ but it appears this is not the case. Please correct me if I am wrong.
