Jazz/Lakers Blockbuster
« on: August 10, 2021, 03:04:57 AM »
Lakers move -
Kyrie Irving $30m (2023) (team can pay $25m for 2021-22 season, $15m for 2022-23 season)
Taureen Prince $14.5m (2022) (team can pay for the full contract)
2021 NBA Draft #9 pick
2022 Lakers 2nd rounder

Jazz move -
John Wall $0m (2022) $13m (2025)
Bojan Bogdanovic $18.7m (2023)
Will Barton $10m (2025)
Daniel Gafford $0.9m (2022) $1.8m (2023)
Daniel Theis (contract extension)

John Wall is injury prone but I'm willing to take the risk and the upsides prevail. Bogdanovic, Barton, Gafford, and Theis will provide some solid depth (despite overpriced contracts) as the Lakers look to go all out in the next few seasons. Kyrie Irving is obviously one of the best point guards in the NBA right now but keeping him and re-signing AD at $30m takes up over half of the cap space for at least the next 2 years. That leaves me with having little depth for some time.

I believe Vik would like to use his team extension on Theis which I think is $8m per year. Also with the #9 pick, Vik has decided to draft Alperen Sengun. Thanks for the negotiations, Vik. Jazz to confirm.

Accept.

Being over cap by a decent chunk starting the offseason meant I had to get creative with moves to remain competitive. This deal gives me much needed cap space and a star in Irving as I'm capitalizing on my depth. I originally took a risk/reward approach by acquiring Wall, and while I do still think he can put up nice numbers (if healthy) moving him part of package here made sense for me. In what is a pretty deep rookie class, I'm high on Sengun so happy to get him with the pick.

 :veto:

Something isn't adding up in this trade. This might be one of the worst trades I have ever seen and I think maybe the Lakers did the math incorrectly when they agreed to this trade. I can't imagine them understanding the full consequences of the trade and still making the trade. Since the Lakers are paying so much on Kyrie Irving ($25m in 2021, $15m in 2022) and Taurean Prince ($14.5m in 2021) in addition to taking in Bojan Bogdanovic ($18.7m), Will Barton ($10m), Daniel Gafford ($0.9m), and Daniel Theis ($8m with extension) their cap space decreases from $41.1m (enough to currently match Kyle Kuzma in RFA @ $10.8m per year for 5 years and re-sign Anthony Davis at $30m per year) to now only having $8.5m available and not being able to re-sign Kyle Kuzma or Anthony Davis. The Lakers shed $5m in cap space in 2021-22 by paying $25m of $30m for Kyrie Irving and take on $37.6m in 2021-22 in the form of Bojan Bogdanovic ($18.7m), Will Barton ($10m), Daniel Gafford ($0.9m), and Daniel Theis ($8m). The Lakers even admit those players are overpaid.

This trade is in essence trading away Anthony Davis, Kyle Kuzma, a mostly paid Kyrie Irving, the #9 overall pick in a stacked draft, a fully paid Taurean Prince and a 2nd round pick in 2022 in exchange for John Wall, Bojan Bogdanovic, Will Barton, Daniel Gafford, and Daniel Theis. It is in essence a 5 for 5 deal for a small cap space gain (assuming Davis and Kuzma would be re-signed and now cannot be) and the Lakers are sacrificing 2 of the top 20 players in the league to do it (Davis and Irving).

So the trade is in essence the following for a small gain in cap space:
Anthony Davis
Kyrie Irving
Kyle Kuzma
Taurean Prince
Alperen Sengun (#9 overall draft pick)

For

John Wall
Bojan Bogdanovic
Will Barton
Daniel Gafford
Daniel Theis

I understand the Lakers could make other trades to potentially remedy this, but it sounds like they had planned on resigning Anthony Davis and now this trade makes that essentially impossible and Kuzma is most likely lost as well.

Sorry but I have to veto as well.

I really don't understand this for the Lakers. Kyrie and the #9 pick are the 2 best assets moving in this deal. With 2/3s of his contract being paid, he should land more than a group of role players and a major injury risk in Wall.

I am pretty low on Irving, but I didn't read carefully to see how much was paid each way. For clarification, who was paying Prince's contract? I had assumed the Jazz was taking it on but it isn't clear on re-reading it.

I see it differently i trust vik and would i make this  trade im not sure but vik is really good  at figureng how to make his cap work. Vetoing a trade i feel has to come down to one thing is it colusion or not and the answer is no. I feel both owners obviously discussed this trade and both like it. I feel if both teams ate happy then their is no reason to veto it. Trust me like i said vik is a cap wise owner he knows what he is doing and no way is he done with tradeing. Vik is in a win know stage and thats how he works.

Vik isn?t the side that?s questioned in this deal.

I am also unclear about who is paying Prince?s salary in this deal. Need that cleared up.

To make it clear, Lakers are paying on Prince in full.

I understand vetoes happen, but this is a deal that was thought over by both teams and think it is fair value and what we thought is best for our franchise. We all have different values but in my view I am sending plenty of quality and depth. We can discuss what will happen with Wall forever, but if he does stay healthy on this new look Houston team there is legit high end production.  Bodganovic even if a little pricey is still great production for 3s and points.

I trust Wayne and his Lakers have a plan. I can't speak for his expired players but I'm sure he factored it, and he still has a plenty of cap to work with.
