Phillies / Royals Trade
« on: October 08, 2013, 07:18:33 PM »
The Phillies and Royals announce a trade.

The Royals send

OF Avisail Garcia (minors)
P Rafael De Paula (minors)
P Jonas Dufek (minors)
P Matt Garza (extended for 3 yrs at $10,250,000 per year, his 2013 salary, Garza ranked 101 out of pitchers witch put him at 85%, current salary higher so its used)
2013 4th round pick

The Phillies send
P Cliff Lee ($25M in 2014, $25M in 2015)
Cash $25M in 2014, $25M in 2015)

The Phillies are in a full rebuild and moving an older pitcher for a younger above average starter in Garza and 2 very young players in Garcia and De Paula.  Garcia will slot into my 25 man next season.  De Paula is said to have top of rotation ceiling his prospect ranking has been hurt by birth certificate issues and a full year lost to a suspension related to said issues.  Jonas Dufek has seemed to find his calling after getting settled into a bullpen role.  The 4th rounder will add further depth.
Paying Lee's contract made it possible to get the prospects I really like.  His contract as it is has really no place in a cap league like this one.  Paying it was only way to move it for a great return.

Royals accept. While it seems like a great amount to give up for one player for 2 years, it just made a lot of sense for me. I currently have Span/Pagan/Bautista/Reddick/Dom Brown/Cain/Lough in my crowded OF and Garcia was very expendable since he might not even start for me right now (why I kept him in my minors all season). De Paula has looked good, but hasn't proven anything yet and Dufek is a minor league reliever. Garza may seem like a loss, but I would not have been able to pay his extension salary anyway, so he really was not a loss at all. I get an elite starting pitcher to add to the best rotation in the history of baseball for no salary at all. Thanks to the Phils for good dealings.

Question about the salary for Garza though. He made 9.5 for me last year, so I believe that is what it should be for the extension.

ARB years 4-6 are based on actual MLB salaries. I'm pretty sure that is the case here too.

Garza made $9.5m last year for :KC: so Sean you are correct with that observation.  But as the rule states:

"A player's new salary may not be lower than the previous year's. If this is the case, the extension value will move to the previous year’s salary."

So looking up Garza's extension value gives him the 85% which is $7,287,500.  This is lower than the previous year of $9.5m so we move to his previous season's contract (2013) in which he made $10.25m.

Jeremy is correct in stating the extension will be $10.25m for 3 years.

Just a quick note though as this is a sign and trade.  The signing will go against one of :KC: two Free Agent signings as we cannot trade pending FA's.  Pretty sure you guys knew that though but just stating.
