NYY Rays Deal
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:26:11 PM »
The Yankees and Rays have agreed to a trade:

The Rays send:

Joel Peralta ($925K)
Geovany Soto ($3M)
Tim Beckham
Alex Colome

To NYY for:

Mariano Rivera ($15M)
Curtis Granderson ($10M)
Jesus Montero

Details after Valentines dinner

(Made an edit to change "Alex Colonel" to "Alex Colome".  Gotta love auto-correct.  Also updated Peralta's salary from $900K to $925K)

NYY confirms  :judge: we do this trade to get over cap by 14m instead of 35m and still get a starting C, and 2 top prospects of the Rays. ( Second trade of NYY coming soon and will be under the cap  :win:)

The Rays have agreed to this trade for the following reasons:

We understand that the Yankees needed to make a severe salary dump and that Rivera and Granderson were major hindrances to getting under the cap.  They are both on one year contracts however so taking them on my roster will only be a hit for one season.  Both players should provide legitimate value in their respective positions.  Rivera is likely to need some time on the DL at his advanced age, but my bullpen is fairly sound behind him.  Granderson is a very good player that will provide an immediate boost to our lineup.  I project Montero as a .290/15/80 guy this year in Seattle.  Nothing great, but in time he could be a solid long-term find.

Peralta is a significant value for New York as he is a top flight setup man under $1M.  Considering that Fernando Rodney is currently over $2M in bidding, Peralta is a superior option at a minimal rate.  However, with Rivera on board, he was expendable.  Soto is a very good offensive catcher, but I took the more long-term approach with Montero in the hopes that he will build into a very good hitter one day.  Beckham and Colome are very good prospects who should both be solid MLB players one day.

I'm taking on a staggering amount of salary and giving up 2 very good prospects in this deal, but I feel that it is worth it to put two more solid cogs and a long-term keeper on my roster.

At first glance, this trade looks very lopsided, but once you consider all the factors associated with it, it seems fair.

Miami will receive a significant boost in production here in 2012; this much is true.  But once the 2012 season is over, Miami will be left with just Jesus Montero from this deal, as Granderson and Rivera both have just one year left on their deals.

Peralta has just one year left on his contract, but he could be great trade bait at the deadline if NY isn't competing.

Gio Soto is an offensive minded catcher who has 2 years left on his contract and should produce sufficient points for NY for those 2 years.  (He's also a good trade deadline candidate)

Colome and Beckham are both very good prospects.  I think we all know quite a bit about Beckham.  The truth is, he is starting to produce and will be a viable shortstop for some major league team very soon.
Colome is a very unknown, very good pitching prospect for the Rays.  He is the best right hander in their system and has really, really great stuff.

Miami is getting quite a lot of short term value and a good long term DH kind of guy.
New York is getting a couple interesting Major League players and a pair of good prospects AND they are taking a huge step towards getting under cap (which is VERY important!)
