Vancouver/Washington Trade
« on: December 19, 2019, 09:49:36 AM »
:VAN-NBA: receives:
Danilo Gallinari 1(2020)
.5M pd in 2019 & 2020

:WAS-NBA2: receives:
Zhaire Smith 2.6(2021)

:WAS-NBA2: makes this trade to acquire another high upside young talent.  Smith by all accounts has the upside to potentially be a star once he develops and I can afford to wait a bit on that development.  While Gallinari has been solid, he was more valuable to me as a trade chip.  Thanks and good luck to Vancouver.

Grizz confirm.

Add a solid depth piece in case of injury down the road.
We're high on Smith as well and it was tough to part with him, but being in win-now mode the added depth is more important than the long-term future.

This is really tough for me. I really don't like vetoing but I am having a hard time seeing the value here. Gallinari is top 50ish player still when healthy (which he is this year) and on nice contract. I don't disagree Smith has some upside but to me Washington should get something else in addition to him. Maybe Smith has more upside than I see, so for now just putting this out there but going to hold off actually voting in either direction see what others think.

It's tough for me too see the value of the trade for Washington. With the numbers of Gallinari and his contract he could have a lot more.

I don't think that i'm going to veto this while both parts agree but I need to hear what Ryan has to say about this comment and Vik one.

This one hurts because I used to be attracted to Zhaire's upside, and to be fair to Wizards, he's a lot younger than Gallinari... But this just doesn't feel right. Zhaire is young but has regressed every year he's been in the league, and not only can he not carve out a role on a thin 6ers bench, he can't even find consistent minutes/production for their G-league affiliate. We have unrostered and unsigned players currently well out-producing Zhaire, and his seemingly only remaining upside is his former draft status. I really don't see much value going Wizards' way, and Gallinari is a solid contributor on a very nice contract.

Not sure how many other Zhaire fans there are, but being one who is also realistic I'm gonna have to go :veto:

I look at it this way, Smith is a Year removed from being a top 2 pick. He’s an incredible athlete with a significant amount of upside. While that comes with risk as does any first or second year player, the upside is significantly more valuable to a team in my situation than a player like Gallinari.
Gallinari has been very solid this season and in general over his 10+ year career, but he’s 31 and injury prone. Only twice in his career has be played more than 68 games and I don’t see that likely improving as he gets older. Beyond that while his contract is great, he will be a free agent after next year, which at best gives me one season of the cheap contract before a resign of a then brittle 33 year old is necessary.

So while any trade of a productive vet for a young player is a risk, this one definitely seems to make sense to me.

Sorry guys, going to officially  :veto: as well. A small adjustment like even a 2nd rounder would probably be enough for me to approve.

Looking into it, Wizkid made a good point where Smith is simply not even stuffing the stats in Gleague. With that said he was 16th overall last year and decent upside just may need longer to develop, but potentially may also be a bust. With high uncertainty, and this year Gallinari being healthy and playing great, trade just feels off as a straight 1 for 1.

Will let rest of TC decide on final outcome.

 :veto:

This has been hashed out enough.  There needs to be more return for Gallinari.
