Rockies/Brewers Trade 7.23.2022
« on: July 23, 2022, 02:32:22 PM »
Rockies Send:
Eric Hosmer, 1B, SD, $19.555M, 2022

Rockies will pay Hosmers contract for 2022.

Brewers Send:
Doug Nikhazy, RHP, CLE, Prospect

I've had Hosmer on my block for most of the season.  He's not in my future plans and I would not have extended him.  Getting a solid pitching prospect in exchange is what I was hoping for.   Looking to add depth to the minor league system and I like Nikhazy.

Accept.

Can't say I have a big need for Hosmer, but good insurance rest season. Costs me Nikhazy who is intriguing, but still good fit for both teams.

 :veto:

With apologies I'm going to veto this trade based upon league integrity. A prospect I've never even heard of for Hosmer who is a 400 point player projecting for 800 points and ranked top 25 at his position would be difficult enough, but that 20 M is also covered is what puts it over for me. Hosmer for 20m probably doesn't garner a ton of interest on the trade market since he's a risk of regression in the second half, but one prospect who is going to be ranked in the lower portion of Cleveland's top 30 does not balance on this trade.

The trade will now go to the trade committee for a vote from :TOR: and :LAD::SF: has already cast their vote as No and because :MIL: is involved he cannot have a vote. :CHW: needs to be replaced on the committee since resigning. For this trade to pass :TOR: and :LAD: will both need to vote Approve.

Instead of a committee vote teams are welcome to rework this trade to find a better balance, in either more quantity of raffle ticket prospects or more quality of prospects or some other value.

All the contending teams are strapped for cap.  What's the difference paying for Hosmer for the rest of this year or taking back some bad contract?  I've had Hosmer on the market most of the season and this is the best deal I've felt I could get for him.  I'd rather take this deal than lose him to Free Agency and get nothing.

Nikhazy was a 2nd round pick last year and rated in the top 30 org prospect lists for Cleveland in MLB Pipeline and Baseball America.  He's pitching in A+ with respectable numbers.  He's not an unknown.

I know I'm new to this league but if this gets vetoed I feel that is a hit to league integrity.  You better not allow any trade moving forward that a team with cap pays salary or takes back a bad contract.

I'm not a newb to fantasy baseball and I wasn't taken advantage of.

The issue is not that you're taking on salary or paying salary or taking a dead contract. It is encouraged that all the rebuilding teams do something like that to pick up better prospects and rebuild faster.

The issue is Hosmer is a top 25 1B with a 20M salary being traded for a prospect currently ranked 20/30 in Clevelands top 30, and unlisted on Baseball America or Baseball Prospectus as a future prospect of note. The point is that :MIL: isn't giving up enough value, not that you're trading Hosmer or taking salary or cap or anything like that.

Value is perception, market is what you can get.  I had a number of discussions about Hosmer and all went nowhere quickly.  Top 25 at his position or not his market is limited in this league right now because of his salary and that his contract ends after this year.

Regardless of what the perceived value is by the trade committee that doesn't mean other GMs feel the same way. Hosmer has very little market as it is, and if this is rejected he'll have none.

 I don't like the deal.

But everyone's point is valid.   Brewers are literally getting a free player.  A very useful player.  -‐--- by my estimation probably good for another  +/-  275 pts (ROS)
Hosmer's market probably is limited, and I accept this MAY have been the best deal they felt they could get for a return.
To the point above, Doug Nikhazy, isn't really "an unknown".  He had a fine career at Ole Miss, was a top 60 draft pick last year, and has performed well in his first year of pro ball. (Mid 3s over 14starts) -- serviceable, but probably not 20m and 250-300pts
I DO think it's a solid start in the framework of a deal.

It's probably is worth pointing out, that I think this would be an uneven trade, regardless of the teams involved. However, the team set to receive Hosmer, is FIRMLY in the playoff race, and in my mind a legitimate contender for the title again this season. (speaking to league integrity)

Possible suggestions:
The Brewers do have some money available +/- 3m
Maybe Rockies cover 17 and get another similar lower level (A/A+)prospect  and a pick/ int $ or perhaps the pitcher and a descent draft pick.   ?????

ALL OF THAT BEING SAID.    I won't outright veto the deal.  If the Blue Jays see this to be a fair/good deal, then let it pass.

But I do not like the deal, as it is currently constructed.

On further discussion, the Commissioners office will withdraw the veto.

I want to be very clear that this has nothing to do with who is involved or the structure of the trade, the veto is about the substance of the trade only. From a GM perspective, I am 100% against this. I believe that these types of trades are detrimental to the health and integrity of the league. However, based upon current circumstances I will not veto. Hosmer may very well have no trade value, that is a reality of having a 20M contract on a declining player and in my personal opinion should be a consequence of poor decisions. But we cannot punish a new owner for a previous owners bad decisions.
