Reds and Red Sox agree to a trade.
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:33:37 PM »
Red Sox trade:

SP Jose Fernandez - '14 Sal / 1 yr Serv Time @ $440k I believe.
SP Felix Doubront - '14 Sal / $518.5k, '15 - '16 ARB, '17 FA
SS Andrelton Simmons - '14 Sal / $480k? '15 - '17 ARB, '18 FA
RP Brian Duensing - '14 Sal / $1.3m, '15 ARB, '16 FA

Reds trade:

RP Aroldis Chapman -  '14 Sal / $3m, '15 - '16 ARB, '17 FA
1B Yonder Alonso -   '14 Sal / $1.12m, '15 - '16 ARB, '17  FA
OF Quintin Berry -  '14 Sal / $440k, ARB 15 - '17, '18 FA
2B Rickie Weeks -  '14 Sal / $11m, '15 FA
OF Ryan LaMarre -  (Reds #9 Spec)
1B Neftali Soto -  (Reds #13 Spec)

The Reds agree to this trade to upgrade my starting pitching and give me some much needed depth. I also gain salary cap relief from Rickie Weeks. I've got a lot of open spots in my bullpen and can now concentrate on filling them with my rotation all set.

I may have to veto just to save Boston from himself.

Red Sox approve this trade, Chapman and Alonso fill my two most barren positions for the next two years, and Weeks, despite his contract, is a potential asset in the middle infield. I was more than happy to accept the 3 specs as compensation for taking on Weeks. Losing Fernandez and Doubront certainly hurts my rotation, but I can fill out my rotation easier on the FA market then I can fill out my 1B/CL with a minuscule FA market at those positions. I would also ask the Pirates how they plan to "save me from myself."

I'm at 50.1% approval.  Not sure why anyone would trade an elite starter with 5 years of team control for a reliever and role players.  Borderline approval.

Yeah I have to chime in just to save Bazinga from himself.

Jose Fernandez, 566 points, 9th rated starting pitcher in our league.  21 years old.  Has six years of control left since he's in your minor league system.  Truly the best young pitcher in all of baseball right now.

Andrelton Simmons, 562.8 points, 3rd rated shortstop in our league.  Scored more points than Troy Tulowitzki in our league.  24 years old with 4 years of control left.

What you're getting in return.

Aroldis Chapman, 9th rated closer, 437 points.  $3 million contract, 25 years old
Yonder Alonso, 38th rated 1st baseman, 405 points, team control, 26 years old
Rickie Weeks, 44th rated 2nd baseman injured this year 221.4 points, 15th rated last year, $11 million contract, 30 years old

And these guys, they're not prospects.  They're minor leaguers, there's a difference.

Quintin Berry - 28 years old, had 8 MLB at bats this year.
Ryan LaMarre - 24 year old, .699 OPS in AA this year, .539 OPS in AAA this year
Neftali Soto - 24 year old, .727 OPS in AAA this year

Like I said, I don't like to veto because I think if you can rape another team then more credit to you but this is the second really questionable trade you've made in the span of like a week and I don't think that's good for the league.   I don't think you did your homework in evaluating this trade and I think, for whatever reason, based on our conversations exploring trade possibilities that you have highly overvalued minor league players over established major leaguers.  Fernandez and Simmons are as elite as they get at their positions, they're also both incredibly young, and incredibly cheap.  You're trading them for 50 cents on the dollar.

Well, anyone who hasn't played in an MLB game is most definitely a prospect. That's what the minor leagues are. Alonso only played just over 100 games and if you project him for a full-season his production is just over 600 pts. Which would place him near the top (outside of Chris Davis who's on a level by himself this past year).

Chapman is one of the few elite closers in baseball and position scarcity should be considered with closers. There aren't very many of them with a definite hold on their job and he is one of them.

Both of these guys are in their prime right now. In light of the 5 team monster trade which no one seems to have a problem with, this trade should pass easily.

If you think that's true then we should do some trading.

Simmons is a a elite as it gets? With a .248 average/ .292 OBP? I don't know exactly how the point system works in this league, but it seems to me like he's be about average at his position, even with his fluke HRs. And where else are you going to find a cheap, cost-effective 1B like Alonso controlled for as long as he is with his production? Weeks is a solid candidate for a bounce back, and as I've said, I'm comfortable in taking on huge contracts that don't extend more than two years.
Fernandez plays for the Marlins, so he can't really rack up the fantasy points like Chapman can on a contender.

If you think this is a bad deal, the Reds offered me Alonso for Fernandez straight up last week. That's a bad deal.

If y'all want to veto this trade, go ahead, I wouldn't resent that because dealing those 3 is very risky and I wouldn't mind having them back. However, I do feel like I know what I'm doing.

I don't know exactly how the point system works in this league

You should probably go read it because it's pretty important to how players are valued.

If you understood the scoring better you would understand why your reasoning is poor.  I'm not going to veto because I can't wait to make trades just like this with someone but you should take the time to reconsider this thoughtfully.  I'm honestly trying to help but that's your deal so I'll stay out of it from this point.
