Any extensions that are made during the season are effective immediately. This means if you extend a player during the 11/12 season, the first year of the contract is 11/12.

Sorry this detail was missing from the rules.

Once the season is over there will be a lengthy extension period, from the end of the season until the end of the NHL entry draft. During this time you can extend players or trade player's negotiating rights. After this period there will be about a 2-3 week period to select your draft keepers, and following that we will have our supplemental draft.

Are you able to extend a player during the extension period for less than their expired contract value?

For example - Player Smith's contract expires at the end of the 11/12 season. His contract was worth 3 million a year. However, his extension value is only 1.5 million.

Do I have the ability extend him for less money, or do I have to let him go to FA?

Yes, the extension period I mentioned is after the season so that is not considered as extending during the contract. If you extend during the season then the new contract must be no less and no shorter than the current remaining contract. But, once the season is over the players contract is expired and you have control of them as a restricted free agent and can extend them at their value even if it's less than their prior contract.
