Discussion: Bonuses
« on: March 14, 2014, 04:05:11 PM »
Again reading through the CBA. So rewarding players for playing well. This would not affect players in the last year of the contracts, or at least the concept I am thinking about would not. Basically we would have a bonus structure to all players contracts, so say a players scores 30 goals in a season, they get a bonus of say $0.2m towards next years contract, or if they scored 40 goals they would get a bonus of $0.5m to their contract. Of course there would have to be different sections but just looking at the feasibility of this in this league.

Let me know your thoughts.

Off the top it seems like a lot of extra work to troll through all player performance stats and update/change contract values for the following season. As always I like keeping things simple.....but I do like the idea in general terms. Can we use some creative thinking to allow for "some" contracts to have a bonus structure instead of for "all"? Maybe this could be built into prospect contracts only.....and/or for veteran's over a certain age.

Forget prospects for now. I'd say limit it to veteran free-agents/extensions on a single year term only. It could allow for a much lower "base rate" and have the bonus structure as you imagine. I'd go a step further and say all such contracts are on a full "no movement" clause. No waivers, no trades.

I kind of like this idea, and as Slack has mentioned, it looks to be a bit of extra work for somebody. To help in that manner I propose we name a "Franchise Player" That player would then be eligible for the incentives or bonuses. Chew on that for a bit.............

Love it. Clean and simple.
But maybe now we are just talking about a "home-town discount" rather than contracts that could have a cost over-run. It's a direction I'd rather take to be honest.

Here's a riff.....what if (in addition to having a 20% +/- discounted franchise player) the top player at each position "hits their bonus" as described by Drew? Imagine the #1 C, LW, RW, D, & G earn a contract bonus of $1m that carries forward. Further, that all these designated players (franchise & top ranked guys) have no movement clauses for the following season as well.

Guess we could go on and on.

I like the potential of all this, but I also feel that this all could get very complicated. I like keeping contracts the way they are now.

Agreed.....especially in context of some of the other proposals. Best not to change too much all at once.
