Practice Squad Player Rules Contracts & Bonus Pools
« on: September 11, 2018, 03:39:10 PM »
NFL Countdown GMs,

The Practice Squad Player rules have been updated on both who can be on a PS and how PS contracts work.  The updates are highlighted below and posted within the rules.
https://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?board=3793.0

Practice Squad (Minor League) Roster: (Addition)

The max years a player can remain on a Practice Squad is 3 years.  Once a player is on a PS for three years he either has to be released or he has to be promoted to the active 53 roster and his contract will become a normal contract at league minimum with an expiration date 3 years from when the 3 year PS threshold was reached. (Was previously stated under Contracts section)

- Players must be on a PS contract or drafted in the NFLC draft after round three and on a round 4-7 rookie contract to be eligible for the Practice Squad Roster.

Practice Squad Contract: (Addition)

Initial 2018 practice squad players will start with a $0.4m (PS-n/a) contract.  The contract will change to a P-2021 contract if they reach the threshold determined above or if the player meets the criteria below.

NFL Countdown: Practice Squad Bonus Pools
« Reply #1 on: September 24, 2018, 01:09:33 AM »
NFLC GMs,

The NFL allows teams a set pool of money to sign UDFAs after the draft.  NFLC will adopt a similar rule allowing teams to sign players that qualify for the NFLC practice squads (great than or equal to 16 games played in a career).  The bonus pool will run from the end of the NFLC draft until the end of that NFLC season.  For the 2018 NFLC season, it will start at 1200am EST on 25 Sep 18.  Each team will receive a pool of $10M that is not tradeable.  When bidding on a player that qualifies as a PS player, bid in only bonus money.  The PS-Contract is paid from actually team salary if on the active roster.  If you exhaust your Practice Squad Bonus Pool money, GMs can still bid on PS eligible players, however they will not qualify for the PS contract and will have to be signed to a regular contract.

Further practice squad clarification:

Since NFL practice squads don't have real NFL contracts, if the player was on a PS on 3 Sep and that team's GM "kept" that player, then they get a PS contract.  If that player had 16 games played, then that PS contract has an expiration date 3 seasons from now, so 2020.

If the player was on a PS and not kept by the GM or released after the rosters were posted and they had 16 or more games, then they no longer are eligible for a PS contract and have to be signed like a regular FA.

  • Jonathan: I don't think the Lakers did that bad. You have to give a lot to get a top player, who is in his prime. #4 pick is good, but not quite Morant/Barrett good. My guess is Pels trade down for more assets.
