Title: Official Entry Draft Discussion Thread
Post by: Canada8999 on September 13, 2010, 07:54:27 PM
Remember, the EDR is at 10 players for this draft.  It does not expand to 15 players until the 2011 season.  Also, this draft, is still considered to be a part of the 2010 season, so your books have not closed.  You will need to clear the necessary cap space before a player is signed.

Are we still allowed to make drops during the draft, or do all transactions need to be made before it starts?

Base salaries ($500k) do not count toward the salary cap; only signing bonuses count towards the cap.

If and only if the player fits on your EDR - if you chose to put some draft picks onto your 40-man roster (do not have room on your EDR), they are treated like any other prospect signed via FA.

1)  Yes, drops can be made whenever.
2)  Good point.  I am sure most know this, but we don't want GMs going by the letter of the law in this post and therefore misunderstanding the rules.

Is it possible to hold future drafts when the trade embarge is lifted? It would be fun to allow teams to trade up or down depending on how the draft is progressing.

While we are at it, can we get rid of trading deadline all together (or at least lift it as soon as the season is over?)

No more trading of draft picks AND trade deadline expires when the season is over (which is after the draft).

Wouldn't it be fun if teams have options of trading up and nab Taillon?

I agree it would be fun.  Howe, this is where I think Agents vs. GMs could use this functionality.  Consider that the league where we have the fun un-traditional rules in place.

No, trading draft picks stopped at the trade deadline and is not allowed going forward.

Guys - if you know you won't be able to make your pick and there is a chance you will be up in the next few hours, send in a proxy list... at the current pace we'll be getting ready for the 2012 draft before this finishes.

How do we go through prime hours with only one auto-proxy pick?!  After so much draft pick trading during the year, we're not interested in the draft itself?

If we don't get things moving a little better through the weekend, I think we should seriously reconsider our rules for the time limit and missing picks...

I think part of the problem is the timing of the draft.  Some teams might no longer have baseball on their minds now that football has started.  Theoretically, we could have had the draft the day after the signing deadline.  An earlier draft would have caused teams to think twice about cutting high priced players, while there is no downside to doing so now.

I'll second both points.  It will also help since activity dies down after the trade deadline, the draft will help keep focus.

Proposal: each team has 1 hour to make a pick. Teams that miss their picks get a player from BA's list. These teams will also have the option of changing the auto picked player provided the new player has not been taken by another team.

I think 1 hour is very short - personally I had 2 hours in mind.  Probably not a big deal either way.

Changing picks could be messy and cause confusion - we could just let the pick keep slipping (if they didn't send a proxy), and the owner makes it whenever they get back, meanwhile other owners rush to get their picks in before that.  Happened in the NFL draft a few years ago (was it the Ravens pick?)

Yeah I like your idea better, less confusion this way. Our draft would finish in 25 days if 2 hour deadline is used, that is pretty reasonable.

hey guys, i think 2 is too little.  Me personally, i have work 10-7 tonight, no way could i keep up with it.  then i'm relegated to proxy picking?!  Rules are as they are, we shouldn't go changing them for this draft.  next year maybe

I have the 12th pick, and I would like to post it at 11:09 am.  That is exactly 16 hours after the 9th pick was posted last night.  Any objections?

I like that idea with a larger window.  The reason I like this is that even submitted proxy lists aren't perfect because the commissioner can't be here 24/7.

One thing I like about having the draft this late is that it forces some teams to give up the free agency rights of some players.  Consider it the antidote to contract extensions for a vibrant off-season free agency.

Not really fair, because the 11th team deserves his full time window which only starts running after the 10th pick is actually made (which just happened).  We can't just assume the next player on the BA list is the auto-pick, since perhaps the owner sent a proxy list and neither he nor Colby were available to post it - we can't really blame that on anyone, and it's not fair for the owner to suffer for it.

24/7 no, but you could chose to work with other members of the board to post picks if you know they will be available (ie: is Dan still helping out as commish?)

Good idea.  I would like to form this group right now.  This group should CC each other on all draft related PMs.  Based on activity, I am selecting myself, Dan, Jake, Ben, Roy, and Howe... 20% of the league.  It should be up to us to communicate who is up next and make the auto-pick or proxy pick if the GM has surpassed the 8 hour time limit or given a pre-ranking of the next picks, respectively.  This should get us to 3+ picks per day.

Sorry, I was unable to access a computer.
With our 3rd pick of the 1st round, the Marlins would like to select Zack Cox, 3b, Arkansas. Thanks!

Cox has a 3.5mil signing bonus plus the .5mil prospect salary which brings it up to a grand total of 4mil. The Marlins only have 3.5mil free, so is this a valid pick if you exceed your salary cap?

Ok folks, let's get some more excitement going about the draft...  To this point we've had:

Quote
1-1 NYM - C Bryce Harper $7m bonus
1-2 WAS (from BAL) - MI Manny Machado $5m bonus
1-3 FL - P Jameson Taillon $6m bonus
1-4 KC (from PIT) - SP Alex Wimmers $1.5m bonus
1-5 BAL (from WAS) - CI-OF Josh Sale $2.5m bonus
1-6 MIL (from CHW, from CIN) - OF Micheal Choice $2.5m bonus
1-7 SD - MI-OF Kolbrin Vitek $1.5m bonus
1-8 BAL (from WAS from KC from CHC From LAA) - P Chris Sale $3.5m bonus
1-9 FL - CI Zach Cox $3.5m bonus
1-10 SF (from NYY from CHC from KC) - P Deck McGuire $3m bonus
1-11 ARZ (from HOU) - C Yasmani Grandal $2m bonus
1-12 TEX - OF Jake Skole

Not much surprise with the top 3 (although Taillon was an auto-pick).
Picks 4-10 are all well before their actual MLB selections, but still all solid picks
Florida missed their guy at 3, but still get Cox at 9 (and the best P in the process)
Skole goes way above his BA ranking (not in the top 200) in MLB and FGM, both to Texas.

Best value so far?  To this point, no one has been picked too far after their BA ranking.
Who's falling?  Pomeranz is 4th for BA and went 5th in MLB, Colon went 4th in MLB.

Skole surprised me... Pomeranz would have went to the Giants but they didn't have the cap room for his $4m bonus.  I will be interested to see who falls to the Pirates for their first pick of the draft (early 2nd round).

I've been looking forward to the 2nd round for a long time now, which has definitely added to my anxiousness to get this thing moving.

Quote
1-28 MIL
2-2 MIL (from BAL, from CHW, From CIN)
2-5 MIL (from WAS)
2-6 MIL (from CHW)
2-22 MIL (from ATL from CHC)
3-9 MIL (from OAK from CIN)

I will probably forfeit my last two picks as my 40-man and EDR will fill up at that point.  Everything rests on my 2nd rounder.  I have a lot of action going on in the middle of the draft, so I will probably go after some college guys that did well in ProFSL's College Ball league this year.

2-11 PIT (from LAA from HOU)
5-2 PIT (from BAL)
5-4 PIT
5-28 PIT (from WAS from MIL)
6-2 PIT (from BAL)
6-22 PIT (from CIN from PIT from ATL)
6-28 PIT (from MIL)
7-2 PIT (from BAL)
9-2 PIT (from PHI from CHC from COL from BAL)

My whole draft rests on my 2 early 3rd rounders. I have alot of late picks, where i hope to find a diamond in the rough haha.

Honestly in my opinion Zack Cox was a very good value pick. I know some people arent high on him, but i am. Michael Choice was another guy Im very high on. No real surprises in my mind yet

I won't claim to be a huge expert in the MLB draft, but it does seem like Cox is pretty polarizing - some people love him, some really don't.  For instance, BA had him 6th, but he went 25th.

That is correct, based on what is written.  I do believe part of the reason for moving the draft to now was to avoid having to worry about signability, and to remove the rules we have in place for unsigned players - only signed players would be eligible.

Colby - Did we make that official, but not actually put it into the rules?  Or are we still allowed to draft unsigned players?

Note that it won't affect the Indians pick, since they only have $2.0M in cap space.

The lack of participation is pretty pathetic... I understand that people have other priorities, and may even spend the time they do have for this on football instead, but just send in a proxy list if you're in the next 10 picks and won't be around - it's that simple.  If you don't have time to do that, at least let Colby know and we'll give you the auto-pick right away (which is what you'd get anyway).
Title: Re: Official Entry Draft Discussion Thread
Post by: Canada8999 on September 19, 2010, 12:05:35 AM
I think another possible enhancement to the process for next year is something similar to what happens in most online draft rooms these days - if you miss your pick, you're automatically switched to auto-draft.  If you come back and say you're here now, you'll make your next pick then fine, but otherwise we're not stuck waiting the entire window for each of your picks.

I think we could put that idea in to play for this year after the first round.  A PM can be sent around to the entire league giving it several days to take place (next weekend).  Teams would be marked auto-draft via post in the league.  This excludes teams who did not submit proxy lists.
