$2.5m in cap space developed through a waiver deal and several cuts...

This is enough to add Chavez and take on Campana in a likely waiver deal.

$500k = Pierre waived to Boston who take him outright.
$500k = Pirates will cut MI Sogard, Eric, $0.5m (P-n/a)
$500k = Pirates will cut CI Snyder, Brandon, $0.5m (P-n/a)
$1m = Pirates will cut MI Theriot, Ryan, $3.5m (2012) = 75% of salary which is $2.5m after rounding, Pirates had $2m in cash paid on his contract, so the $1.5m net liability is reduced to $500k
