Title: Braves/Tigers swap pitchers
Post by: Mr.TradeKing on July 12, 2010, 10:17:34 PM
:ATL: Sends:

SP Vazquez, Javier, $11.5m (2010)
X-ATL will pay 1mil on his contract
P Fister, Doug, $0.5m (P-n/a)
Draft Pick: 6-7

:DET: Sends:

SP Garza, Matt, $10m (2014)
P Satterwhite, Cody, $0.5m (P-n/a)

This was after a bigger trade of ours fell through, however we were able to salvage our time by agreeing to this smaller deal. Fister has continued to pitch well (and has even been given the first start after the AS break) and is on a desirable contract. Vazquez has been brilliant in his last 8 starts and looks to be gearing up for a big second half. Garza has been solid, but I have my eye on 2011 because I think Vazquez will be better in the second half.

Please re-fresh my memory.  Can we break up money tied to the player from prior trades?  I believe that Vazquez was traded with full salary from and back to the Braves in prior trades.  This was a bit of a unique case where the team that provided the funds got him back, but I'm think about other players as well such as the guys I picked up in trade such as Adam LaRoche, $9m with all $9m in cash.  Can I keep some of the LaRoche money in future trades or is the Vazquez case different because he went back to the team that provided the original funding?  The rule says that the cash stays with the player.  Is this the one exception?

Roy has a good pt.  I would think that once the funds are attached to the player they would stay with the player.

If so, easy solution Det sends that same amount to ATL on Garza in 2010.

We were presented this situation before with Tim Hudson. If you are paying the salary of someone you re acquire, then the money going out is null and void, since now he is part of your official team and now a pay out. So Atlanta should be able to do as they please when they re acquired Javiar since now the salary and player was returned to its original team.

Roy as per your question, we have ruled that money stays with the contract. If you sent LaRoche back to Florida then they dealt him again, they could adjust the amount of money that they are paying. This rule came about when team started sending money for picks yet to be drafted. The Bosox/ Marlins deal got the ball rolling, then the Bosox/ Colorado deal really got the ball rolling.

Aubrey is free to do as he pleases with Javier since the contract was sent back to the start. Of course we would need a ruling from the Commish on this one, but when I was doing the job, that is how it was handled.

Atlanta made full circle with the money they paid to other teams for Vazquez.  Once they received his rights backs, the cash canceled out and was no longer part of the contract since he was back on the team that originally gave the cash.

Just to clear everything up since we had a mini conversation in this thread, we still need 2 approvals from the Trade Committee.

Make sense and I'll support it, but we should put this on the RC board and have it appended to the trade rules.
