Title: Mets and Nats swap some studs
Post by: Corey on May 03, 2012, 11:53:20 AM
The Mets and Nationals have made a HUGE blockbuster deal. The Nationals needed depth. The Mets needed some star studded talent to mix in with the youth.

:NYM: Sends

CI Howard, Ryan, $18m (2014)
X-CI Howard, Ryan, Cash Exchanged on Contract through 2014, $-8m in 2012   $-8m   $-8m   $-6m
CI Catricala, Vincent, $0.5m (P-n/a)
OF Cabrera, Melky, $1.5m (2012)
P Teheran, Julio, $0.5m (P-n/a)
P Withrow, Chris, $0.5m (P-n/a)
SP Zito, Barry, $2m (2013)

to :WAS: for

CI Fielder, Prince, $22.5m (2015)
X-CI Fielder, Prince, Cash Exchanged on Contract through 2013, $-8m in 2012   $-8m   $-4.5m
SP Kershaw, Clayton, $1.5m (2012)
SP Lyles, Jordan, $0.5m (P-2014)

The Mets were just flat torn on this deal. We lose a lot of players to obtain 2. However, with that said we must improve to be able to keep some cap. Much like last years reason for obtaining Bautista then dealing him later. The Mets value Prince far more than Howard. So we send Howard and a few young specs. The Mets are low on SP's so we move Zito and Teheran for Kershaw and Lyles. We upgrade there, so we give up a few extra guys to make up the difference.

Thanks Jake for the negotiations.

Nats confirm. Money was the big factor for me here, as I wouldn't have been able to re-sign Kershaw (comfortably), or keep Fielder long term (comfortably).

I'm not a big prospect guy, but I read enough on Teheran and Catricala that they will get plenty of shots at the majors.

This trade allows me to shed the big contracts while still competing this season. Thanks again Corey.

Nats need to make some player drops before the trade can be processed.
