Title: In Season Free Agent Signings Being Traded
Post by: lp815 on May 13, 2010, 03:39:17 PM
The issue, pursuant to the pending Rockies-Brewers trade, is the trading of players that were signed between the start of the season and June 1st, when Off-Season free agents are permitted to be traded.

The question is, should free agents acquired between the start of the current season and the same season's June 1st deadline be alllowed to be traded prior to June 1st?

We currently have all off-season free agent signings prohibited from being traded prior to June 1st, but what about in-season free agent signings prior to June 1st?

I'm still debating this myself, but the floor is open for opinions.

All FA's shall be created equal.

Example: What if I can't afford to sign an FA, but another team could; that team could sign the FA just to trade him to me. This would never happen in the MLB. Signing FA's should come with some restrictions.

I think I agree with you, MTK.  It doesn't make much sense that if we prohibit trading a player that was signed 3-4 months prior to June 1st, we would allow a player to be traded who was signed 1-2 months prior to June 1st.  This would seem to cause some confusion, that a player signed closer to the deadline is allowed to be moved.

I think the intention of the rule was to have it also apply to FA signed during the season in March, April, and May.

Can we get rid of this FA restriction rule all together? It doesn't serve any real purpose. We don't have to follow everything that MLB does, the MLB system is pretty broken as is.

1)  The intention of the rule was for it to apply to in-season FA signed before June.
2)  We are indeed matching MLB here.  It is understandably broken in some regards.  If we didn't match it as much as possible then the first thing to go would be the variable salary cap.  This league is designed to be a challenge for small market clubs.... at least until MLB changes its ways.

I won't vote, but I will pose some questions for people to consider for the discussion here:

Why do we want to prevent recently signed FA's from being traded (let's all make sure we agree on the purpose, before we try to adjust the ruling)?
Should a player that was overlooked throughout the off-season be treated the same as a player that was highly sought after?
If you sign a player May 31st, can you trade him June 1st?
If you sign a player June 1st, can you trade him that day?
Should we allow PTBNL trades, offering teams a way around the rule?

A player signed June 1st can be traded that day.  What are PTBNL trades?

Player To Be Named Later

Also - if we need a rule to prevent FA's signed in May from being traded, shouldn't that train of thought be applied to June, July, etc.?

I won't vote, but I will pose some questions for people to consider for the discussion here:

1. Why do we want to prevent recently signed FA's from being traded (let's all make sure we agree on the purpose, before we try to adjust the ruling)?
2. Should a player that was overlooked throughout the off-season be treated the same as a player that was highly sought after?
3. If you sign a player May 31st, can you trade him June 1st?
4. If you sign a player June 1st, can you trade him that day?
5. Should we allow PTBNL trades, offering teams a way around the rule?

1. I believe it's to prevent collusion, in a sense.  To prevent teams from taking a player and immediately moving him to another team, that could possibly be aligned with the other team.  An example would be a team with a large amount of cap signing a player, but having an agreement with another team that cannot afford him to move the player prior to winning said player.  I know this could happen on May 31st/June 1st, in theory, but it's a bad practice and shouldn't be allowed all season.
2. Yes, I think they should.  We should remain consistent with the entire free agent system, to avoid confusion.  I recommend we either do away with restrictions entirely or apply them to all free agents signing up to June 1.
3. Presumably, yes.  It seems unpreventable without hurting the league in some way.
4. Same answer to question 3.
5. I believe we should discuss this after the fact of how we should go about this scenario.

My two cents.

As a side note, another reason we have the prohibition in place is to emulate the MLB.  However, I am unfamiliar with the rules of the MLB.  Colby, you mentioned this earlier in the thread, can you elaborate on how we compare and contrast to the majors?

Maybe we can find something from that.

I agree with pretty much everything - my only question would be if the purpose of the rule is to prevent collusion, why don't we need a rule in place to prevent this for FA's signed after June 1st?  Should we look into one?

Yeah, I guess we could look into getting rid of such an extensive prohibition period.  Possibly making it a requirement to retain a player for minimum of 30 days? 60?  Instead of making it a set date, make the prohibition period in relation to the date the player was signed.

If it weren't for the possible maintenance issue, this would be my thought (I'd say 60-day).

Colby - how much of an additional hassle would it be to track whether or not a player has been signed within 60-days (flagged during that period)?

Well, the best way to take care of that would be to add a note to the rosters regarding when the player was signed.  All Dan, myself (or Jake if he is called upon) would have to do is enter the date the player was signed which isn't that hard.  It would be formatted nicely in the roster posting (which is all automatic).

That type of rule may be a suitable compromise between our current rule, the issue of trading players right away after June, MLB's pre-June rule, and fantasy baseball in general.

FYI we are going to re-work the Brewers/Rockies trade, so this ruling can be discussed on it's own merit and strictly with future transactions in mind.

So I guess the first step would be on if we all agree that the current system should be changed?

I will vote yes on this.

Agreed.  I do not think it is a major ruling, but to me the June 1st cutoff seems arbitrary and it does not make sense to only prevent recently signed players from being traded for only part of the year.

I like the 60-day rule... it is a simple compromise between MLB and our league that makes it work in fantasy baseball.  I want to add that any players picked up before this rule has been put in place will be grandfathered in by the old rules.

Therefore, if we voted on this by today, then any player signed before today cannot be traded until June 1st.  Any player signed after today could not be traded until 60 days after the bid was won.  The players who are signed after today, but the bidding started before today (so the intention was that they could trade them) would fall under the old rule.

I'll agree with Colby's proposal.  All signed players from the day this rule goes into effect must be kept by the signing team for a minimum of 60 days.  The June 1st deadline will be removed, and the new ruling with be throughout the season.

You mean they can't be traded for 60 days.  A team should still be able to pick up and drop players at will.

Correct, Mike, my mistake.  Dropping players is, of course, still allowable.  Said player(s) are simply prohibited from being traded.

Let's vote on this one guys...

NEW RULE:  Free Agent signings cannot be traded until 60 days after they have signed.  Any players picked up before this rule has been put in place will be grandfathered in by the old rules.

REASONS:  Prevents possible problems after the current June 1st deadline, eliminates confusion over the old rule, and it is a simple compromise between MLB and our league that makes it work in fantasy baseball.

Dan and I were talking about having a similar 30-day threshold until a player could be released.  What do you guys think?  It would make us think a bit more with prospecting and ease administration.

I approve of a 60 day waiting period for trading FAs.

I am against a 30 day waiting period on cutting FAs.

I would like to add something. This is in regards to the entry draft. In real life MLB - once you draft someone, you cannot trade them for 6 months (it may be a year, I could be wrong). I think we should have the same rule here or some facsimile of it. I would like to get your thoughts on it.

I would be in favor of this - seems to be a significant MLB rule, so we should consider abiding by it also

Lets see if we can push the 60-day rule first, and consider this separately (given Roy's opposition, I don't expect it to be a quick discussion but we are pretty much set with the FA/Trade ruling).
